History

Personal History Lia Varya Grae was born on Sigma Iota V in November 19, 2359 to Arlo and Xylia Circe. Arlo was a Trill male who served as the Federation Ambassador to Sigma Iota V and sponsored their application for membership. He met his wife Xylia, a Halanan female, on Augusts on 2355 during a conference on Andros III. The two fell in love all most instantly, and were married less than a year later.

A year after Lia was born, Sigma Iota V officially joined the Federation and her family relocated to San Francisco, Earth. Growing up on Earth was beneficial to Lia as she showed academic promise from a youthful age and was described as quick-witted and sociable by teachers. Growing up near the Starfleet HQ, Lia was able to interact with a variety of alien races and learned to be very accepting of foreign cultures and races.

She attended secondary school in San Francisco where her interest and passion for medical sciences were groomed. She was a fairly sociable child, openly conversing with other adolescents and classmates both in school and out but was teased by friends for her bookish nature which was much embarrassment to her, though she cannot recall why.

In 2375 at the age of 15, her home was destroyed during the surprise Breen attack signifying their entry into the Dominion War. Fortunately she and her parents survived the attack but it left a lasting impression on Lia’s life. Not to take anything for granted and to embrace life. Following the attack she and a group of her friends would volunteer to help at the local hospitals. Most of her time was spent in the recovery ward, attended to the needs of the patients and then offering comforting reassurance that everything will be ok.

It was from that moment on, Lia knew she wanted to be a Doctor.

A year later in 2376 she was accepted into the summer medical program sponsored by the University of Betazed on Starbase 293 and earned a certificate of excellence from the program.

Her interest and dedication to medicine paid off and the extra credits she received from various programs like the one from the previous year allowed her to qualify for the early entrance to Starfleet Academy. By the fall of 2378 she was accepted into Stafleet Academy and majored in Medicine and due to some persuasion of her peers minored in security. She also took courses in basic leadership and one semester of engineering. During her second year at the academy, she and a few of her classmates were participating in a holodeck away team simulation. This simulation was to test the under classmate in security and combat skills. Lia was well prepared, however what her instructor was impressed with was not how she handled the hand-to-hand combat but how Lia handled aiding a fallen comrade who needed minor medical care. After the simulation the professor approached her suggesting she would make a better career decision to change her minor from security to medical. After weeks of thinking it over, Lia took her professor’s advice and switched her minor.

Lia graduated at the top of her class in 2382 and was quickly offered an assigned as a Medical Officer to Starbase 222. Just as quickly she was offered she accepted.

She quickly adjusted to station life on Starbase 222 she was one of ten nurses on the station. For the first couple of months she served mainly as a filler for the four main nurses however by 2384 she was beginning to see her own patients regularly as she herself climbed up the chain.

In 2385 Starbase 222 received a new Chief Medical Officer, Nicole Musser, who Lia befriended immediately. The two became close friends despite the chain of command and a clear age gap and did well to ensure neutrality with her other colleagues and crew-members. When Nicole was transferred to Starbase 723 she personally requested Lia to be her Assistant Chief Medical Officer, it was a request Lia was happy to accept.

In 2388 she was offered the chance to be Chief Medical Officer of the USS Katana, her first ever starship assignment. She accepted it.
