If there was one thing she hated worse than running around chasing bad parts, it was having to disturb other working departments and science was one of them. However the systems must be checked so before she went she decided it would be nest to make them aware of her intentions. =/\=Lt. Damian, this is Lt. Cmdr. Mo'Bri of engineering. I need to run a systems check of your science lans. May I come and do it if it is not an inconvenient time?=/\= she asked politely.
=/\= Now is fine, commander, =/\= Charles answered. =/\= Come on up. =/\=
=/\= Thank you Lt. Damian. I will be there shortly.=/\= She answered and took Lt. Zen with her and headed for the science labs. She hoped that their presence would not disrupt what ever they might be doing. From what she had observed on other ships, the science prople can be difficult at times and harsh with words. She had hopes this would not be the case. Approaching the lab doors, she turned to Christine, "Look at the primary command chips first. Scan them because you know what to look for. If you find them, pull them and replace them. Then move on to the secondary ones and do the dame proceedure. Look carefully at the gel-pack connections for any evidence of tampering. If you find one call me immediately, understood?", she said. "Yes boss, clear as a bell", she answered. Hitting the door chime, rather than just barging in, she waited for admittance.
Charles looked up from his computer when he heard the door chime. "Come in..." he called out.
Entering the science lab, she scanned the room, locating the different consoles and panels on the adjacent walls, she approached the officer. "Lt. Dampen, I am Lt. Cmdr. Mo'Bri Assistant Chief Engineering Officer and this officer Lt. Zen, my Communications/Engineering Officer. I am sorry if we are disturbing you, but we have reason to believe that maybe some of your primary and secondary systems may have been tampered with. I know that you are aware that the ship has been experiencing failures since leaving New Earth Station and we are checking the systems visually. We should not be long sir", she said as apologetically as she could.
"Lt. Damian, it is a pleasure to see you again but I am sorry it is under these circumstances. Is Lt. Walker around? I would like to ask her if she has time, perhaps after this crisis is over, she would allow me to explore a part of space with her?", Christine said.
J'Loni knew she had met the Lieutenant, but what she didn't know as her interest in the stars. This was something new about her, something she might speak with her on, but first, they had a job to do here.
"As a matter of fact, she is. She's just outside in the lab. Hold on just a moment and I'll get her." With that, he walked to the door and called "Karen, would you step in here just a minute?"
"Coming..." he heard her answer.
"What can I do for you?" she asked as she entered.
"Karen this is Lieutenant Christine Zen," Charles said by way of introduction. "She would like a tour of Astrometrics when they are through here in the lab."
"Not a problem..." she said with a smile as she turned in the direction he was indicating - and came face-to-face with the woman she had seen hanging all over Charles back on the station. "Oh, it's you..." she said, the smile quickly draining from her face and replaced by a cold look.
"Excuse me Lieutenant? I don't think we have had the pleasure of seeing each other before. Lt. Damien was kind enough to allow me to explore my interest in space and the wonderful marvels it holds. He suggested that I speak with you", she said, wondering by what the woman meant by, "Oh, it's you...
J'Loni's quick senses changed the subject, but maybe not quick enough to stop the next set of words were said...
Walker looked the other woman over for the briefest moment. She was a bit surprised that someone from engineering would have an interest in science. But after what she had seen in the Promenade lounge back on the station, she had a pretty good idea what this one's interest was - and it damn sure wasn't telescopes. They were both about the same size - in most ways, at least - she thought and she believed she could take the other woman in a fair fight if it came to that.
Karen chose not to respond to Zen's observation that they had not seen each other before but simply gave a little snort as she glared at Zen. "Hmph. Didn't know any of you deck apes were interested in scientific things. I thought all your type cared about was having your head in an engineering journal or your ass stuffed up a Jeffries Tube somewhere."
J'Loni gave Lt. Walker a glaring look, as if to say that if you even dare...you would have to go through me, type look. "Lt. Damian, may we get started. I don't want to waste any more time than is needed", she said as she looked at Christine. Christine was about to open her mouth when J'Loni looked at her and shook her head letting her know not to get into it.
"Absolutely, Commander. Do whatever you need to do." Charles then turned his attention to Walker. "Just what the hell was all that about?" he asked, referring to what he had overheard her say to Zen. "Lieutenant Zen expressed an interest in Astrometrics and I told her she could have a tour of our facilities."
"I see..." Walker said, the displeasure she felt obvious in her tone. "So I'm supposed to play tour guide to every Tom, Dick, and Harriet that wants it?"
"Just this once, okay?"
"Fine - I'll do it. But in the future I would appreciate being asked instead of just being voluntold to do something."
"Think of it as a learning experience for both of you," Damian said. "Who knows, the two of you might get to be good friends since you both seem to like Astrometrics."
"Not bloody likely!" Walker almost spit the words out before calling out to Zen. "See me when you're finished with your real job, lieutenant. I'll see if I can fit a tour into my busy schedule."
"Thank you Lt. Walker. I will try not to mess up your work schedule", Christine said, as J'Loni grabbed her arm and began to work on the systems. J'Loni could sense the anger and animosity towards Christine and couldn't figure out why but she would later. If Christine wanted to study the heavens in her off hours she had no problem with it. However if it would causeba problem between crew members, especially her team players, she wanted to know about it.
Working quickly, both Christine and J'Loni found several chips amd relays and one containment system relay that had been tampered with and replaced them. Taking these pieces, she went to the Lieutenant, "Sir, We have finally finished here sir. We found and replaced the tampered units, but were you aware that one of your containment systems emitter relays was tampered with?", she said.
"I was not," Charles answered. "Can you explain what was done to it?"
"It seems that there was an embedded code in it that was set to lower the commands to affoard the removal of some of your conainment units. Do you have any of them missing? We have found several bypassed security systems with computer deletion of records of the command recordings. In other words, I could bypass systems in order to do what ever I want to do and then summarily delete all computer records with my authorization codes. The emitter relay we found had such a command code in it", she explained.
"I see..." Charles answered slowly. "And what has been done about this? Were you able to fix it or replace it?" Suddenly another thought crossed his mind. "Who would be capable of bypassing security protocols like that?"
"Lt. Damian, besides myself and my engineering teams, all of whom I trust with my life, a handful of people with knowledge of computer training and their systems, and person who knows the security codes of this ships systems could accomplish it," she said. "We fixed the systems here and have all of them for evidence and further analysis. When we have more, you will be the first to know, but in the mean time, your systems are 100 percent working", she said.
"Thank you commander," Charles said. "I appreciate you taking the time to check everything out - especially in light of everything that's happened in the past couple of days."
"I understand Lt.Damian and if you have any more problems or concerns, don't hesitate to call upon us", she said, and turned to Christine to leave.
Karen Walker stood to one side, listening to their exchange, her attention clearly focused on Lieutenant Zen. She supposed she would have no choice but to give the woman a tour of Astrometrics since Charles had volunteered her, but it would not be a long one - and she sure as hell didn't have to like it. So, walking over to the other red-haired woman, she fixed her with a glare. "If you want a tour of Astrometrics, meet me there in one hour..." she said sharply. "And "don't be late! I don't have all day to play nursemaid or tour guide.
Christine, stopped, turned to face Walker, "What the hell did you say?", she said returning the glare. Clearly the way Walker spoke brought out the memories of Marina, a previous host, who had several failed relationships.
"I said don't be late! I don't have all day to play nursemaid or tour guide." Walker repeated. "Was that in any way unclear?"
"What you said, I heard clearly Lieutenant! However, your tone of voice clearly leaves me with the feeling that either it would be an inconvenience to you to show me Astrometrics, or my presence is, shall we say interrupting something?", Christine shot back.
"Look, it doesn't make a damn bit of difference to me whether or not I show you around the Astrometrcs lab," Walker shot back. "If you want the tour, meet me there in an hour as I said before. If not, it's no skin off my ass. I know you're new to this ship, but you DO know how to find Astrometrics, correct? If not, the ships' computer can guide you there, step by step."
That lit Christine up! "Count on it Miss Walker, you...", and before she could finish the sentence, J'Loni grabbed her and literally shoved her out the . Turning on Christine, "What in the hell was that all about? What did ypu think you were doing? Do you want to be written up? Christine...I understand you have a love of science but you can't go around talking like that!", she said to her.
"Commander, it was the tone in her voice, that triggered a memory from my...damn it...previous host, Marina and her failed relationships. I am sorry boss", she said, and just looked to the floor. J'Loni could sense the emotions from Christine and held her tightly as she cried. "Come on, its been a long day" she said walking away from science.
Walker watched as the two engineers left the science department, thinking back to the embrace she had seen between Zen and Charles back on the station. 'It's not going to happen, no matter how much you may want it to, Missy...' she thought to herself. 'I've waited too damn long for this chance.' Then, as they disappeared through the doorway she spat out...
"Bitch!"
Christine stopped, "No, you're the childish bitch not me!" she shot back, as the doors finished closing.
