J'Loni simply couldn't sleep any longer. Her gut was telling her that something else was still wrong and needed attention. Getting up, making sure not to disturb William and Jenna, she quietly went out into the kitchen area and got a mug of raktajino and sat at her work station. She knew the gamma shift was a capable group of people and didn't question their abilities, however, recent events led her to believe that things can go terribly wrong from one moment to another. Deciding to do a level three diagnostic of a few systems, she ran them. It wasn't long before they were done and the results made her catch herself before she could speak loudly. Replicating a large container of hot coffee and several mugs, she got dressed silently, gently attached the leash to Lone Wolf, who got up noiselessly, picked up her kit and left her quarters. "Salchin, Cordale, sorry to wake you but get your kits and meet me in front of the shield control room we got more problems", she said angrily, making her way towards the lift.
"Are you frigging kidding me..." Renee's groaning voice came back to her over the comm, "I didn't get to sleep until oh my god in the morning, boss..." The sounds of electronic dance music came over with her voice, "All right, all right.. I'm coming, I'm coming.."
The next response was a grumbled mumble of a groan. "Mrrr... Cordale. Comin'." and that was it.
A few minutes later, Renee all but dragged herself into the shield control room, eyes still trying to blink away sleep and her hair a ragged mess, She yawned as the coffee contained exerted a magnetic pull on her, "What's up, ma'am?" She slurred.
Cordale arrived shortly thereafter, with a with his engineering kit in one hand, and a mug of cinnamon spiced coffee in his prosthetic. The mug had a cartoony caricature of him on it, with two thumbs up. Arranged around his cartoony face was the phrase "Thux to be you". It was steaming hot, possibly rather freshly replicated on the way up. He took a swig, and the temperature didn't even seem to phase him.
"Present." he muttered. He seemed a bit sleepy, but there was that sharp gleam in his glazed over eyes. His body was slowly booting up, but his brain seemed well caffeinated. Possibly that was his second mug...
Within forty seconds, Renee's hands were wrapped around a mug with steaming hot coffee in it and inhaled through her nose, perking up a little even as she did so. A first sip of the coffee helped even more. She finally looked up from the cup expectantly.
"Ok we are all here, good. I brought the coffee and I see we are going to need it. We have work to get done. You both know that we have covered most of the primary systems but I still have a gut feeling that there are more tampered systems that have not been looked at. I am talking about secondary systems for propulsion, shields, weapons, structural systems, and environmental. Think of a domino effect theory for a moment. If the primary ones are working, a simple coded chip could bypass the primaries and bring into play and online the secondary ones. These could cause one system to fail one at a time so that by the time they all fail in order, the ship would be defenseless, agreed?" she said looking at them.
"We still haven't vetted all of the shield generators." Renee shook her head We got through fourteen of the primaries, so there are only four of those left, but none of the secondaries or tertiaries have been looked at. From what I've seen, the rot is deep, very deep. I'm replacing everything, basically, chips and in some cases the emotter heads themselves. Oh, they'll hod for tests and standby loads, but some of the heads will blow out at the first hit."
"Cor, you think like that also?", she asked the sleepy eyed Thux.
He gave a slow nod, "Nuthin's workin' right, so gotta fix it all. Be a shame to jus' assume sumthin's workin', so best to just figure everythin's busted, and we gotta a shit ship." he managed, taking a swig of coffee afterwards. "Jus' wanna know who signed off on dis, so I know who to throttle. Nuthin' works, it's almost funny really."
He gave a yawn, with that big wide open mouth fulla' teeth, and that long lazy tongue. "Feels like we already replaced haff the ship...
Exasperated, J'Loni shook her head, "It would seem, the more fucked up things we fix the more fucked up ones we find. Now you can both understand why I HATE Starbase engineers. Well lets go and get our butts to the shield emitter systems and start there...again!", she said.
Cordale simply gave a nod. "I used tah work on antiques. Gasoline fueled, internal combustion." he said while they were on the move. "Trick to dem was, fix one ting, and you find another problem right the eff behind it." he took another swig of cinnamon coffee as they went. "So yeah, reminds me a lotta those times."
He might have been too tired to properly cuss... or maybe didn't like the prospect of cussin' in front of the ladies, one of whom was his boss.
"I say we take the terts offline for now. Prioritize the primary and secondary systems, then come back for the terti.. terr... terts." he settled on his own abbreviation. "See, I figure if we get to dat point where we need the terts, we're kinda screwed anyway. They're pretty much as messed up as the rest, not being lazy but we gotta lotta work ahead of us. I figure, let's triage."
"Yeah, let's go ahead and do that." Renee thought for a moment, "But while we're finishing up the primaries and secondaries, one of us should be checking out the power relays and shunts to the shield emitter arrays. The whole feeder system up to the shields. We can't take anything for granted in the slightest."
"Agreed. Let's get at it. I think if we all work together on eac one it will get done faster. The sooner we can do this before the marines come around snooping the better. I don't trust them at this point in time."
"Wait, question from the Thux... what's going on, and who do we trust?" he paused, "I mean, outside of Engineering."
"There are only two besides Cmdr.Bartlett and the Commadore. Lt. Mok'Tor, security chief anf First Lt. Nyx Valentine of the marines besides Renee's friend Shirley. Other than them no one!", she said quietly. Urginh a tired group, and one wolf, they began their work.
============3 hours later 0630 outside of engineering=====
"I thought we would never make it!", she said dragging two bags of busted chips and other things. Entering her codes, the doorsto engineering opened and they went in directly to her office, whete Lone Wolf curled up on his pillow and went asleep. Poor wolf was exhausted, but he did his job well and deserved his rest. She looked at her team, "Anyone for some hot coffee and food? I am starved. Then we can sift through all this shit", she said.
"I love coffee, and I love food." Cordale said as he slumped into one of the chairs in the chief engineer's office. He jumped back up with a bit of a wince, however, before he adjusted his seating to accommodate his tail.
It had been a long haul and a long time since she had a good laugh when he jumped and fixed his tail. "Sorry Cor...gonna have to get you a special chair for that tail of yours", she said as she got him a cup of steaming cinnamon coffee and some food. Looming at an exhausyed Salchin, " Renee? Hun...you with us here? Want some coffee and food? You look like ypu could use it and some sleep", J'Loni said looking at her.
"Waffles, strawberry syrup and oh yes, coffee... IV drip of it if you have it?" She barely managed a grin, tucking her now shoeless feet under her in the chair she'd curled up in. "But a pot or two if you don't have one."
Smilimg at her exhausted team and served them their much needed and much deserved nourishments, she realized just how tired all three of them were. Noting the time, she finished her food and got comfortable. She knew William would be there at 0800 just ahead of the next shift amd it would be his decision to either let them sleep a little while longer or wake them for duty.
