OLD:
"I just want you to promise me one thing, Commodore. Call it a favor, if it sets you at ease." he paused, "Don't copy the chips, and don't hand out this access lightly. There will be some questions the Network can't or won't answer, so if they say such don't press. Such a failure to answer won't count against your limit. It isn't 'You get three questions', it's 'You get three answers'."
NEW:
"Understandable." Jason replied. "I'm sure we can make sure the right people have access to it. Even if for now it's just myself and the Captain. How long did it take to develop that network?"
"I believe the most human answer is... it's a work in progress. Once the technology existed to allow for it, we started building the network. That was probably around a hundred years ago though, in its infancy there were major problems. Buoys needed constant maintenance and defense. In the last, oh I'd say fifty years we've had major breakthroughs. Now the Buoys guard themselves."
"The construction of a new Buoy is a major undertaking. Though, we only need them at strategic points. For instance, we have plans to install one in the Alpha quadrant. Given the success of this diplomatic approach we may still install one, and with a Federation ship having access to the network, you'll be able to communicate with your home sector far easier."
He took a breath, "The Buoy network allows for nearly instantaneous communication between any two points on the network. How it works... would be a difficult question to answer."
"Something best left to techies and computer fanatics it sounds like." Jason said. "The amount of work that goes into both your people's infrastructure and technologies is quite impressive. Even we would never have thought of some of the things I've read about."
"I fear that may be because of a bottleneck of thinking. From what I've read, almost everyone in your sector goes about exploring space using.. for the most part.. the same technology. Same energy sources, same weaponry, same defenses. You'll find that out here, in what you call the Delta Quadrant, some of us do things very differently."
"And I'm sure we'll maybe learn a few things ourselves about what works and what doesn't." Jason said. "Already, there's been much that we've seen out here but the Federation is slow and cautious to adapt some of that technology."
The Ts'usugi gave a nod, "Certainly. One must consider every angle and every outcome. Throw a stone in a pond, after all, and the ripples it makes might shake the world."
"And it seems we've had enough of those ripples for a while. At least for as long as we can avoid them." Jason said.
J'Loni was getting bored by the whole feast now and had started to look for Mok'Tor to leave as soon as she found him. She was never really good at parties and special occasions. Even as a child she could never deal with it and started to look for him. Feasts were for dignitaries, ambassadors and diplomats, none of these were her so she felt she did not belong.
"For the record, I agree. These things can be kind of a drag." Honn said. "Sorry. I sensed your boredom." The Betazoid CDO said with a grin. "You can't argue with some of this food though."
J'Loni looked up in surprise. "Cmdr. Honn! I did not sense your presence. Foolish of me to let my guard down", she quickly. "I had no idea you were able to read my thoughts. Are you from Betazed?", she asked.
"I am." she said. "There's a lot going on here, so I can hardly be surprised you didn't filter me out. These kind of things can be mundane even for those of us that have to actually be here."
"I am half Betazoid but yes I can telepathically talk to others and do possess the empathy as well. I do have my limits as well. My mother saw it fit to get a Vulcan Master to help guide me and it was granted so I had a Vulcan teacher helping me.
Honn nodded. "The Ts'usugi are very interesting in that they don't respond to a casual attempt to read them." she said. "It must have driven the first Betazoid to encounter them a little bit nuts."
"I would assume so. I do believe that the peace talks here today, we have achieved something great and wonderful. It will give us the opportunity to peacefully expolre and find trade routes for our peoples needs. Possibly even colonization of a planet perhaps in the future", she said.
"I hear rumblings that Branex wants to apply to join the Federation, but there's still some anxiety from the Federation Council that they desperately need to work through." Honn replied. "The sooner everyone sees non-uniformed people out here, the better off we'll all be."
"Well if I can be of assistance there, as a representative of Q'uonoS, not as our Federations uniforms, as you say, but as an Allied world, then I offer my services yet again. If the Branex see another representative, dressed in their uniforms, it might ease the anxiety that they hold", she said to Commander Honn.
Talea considered the idea for a moment. "I will take the idea under advisement. You may be on to something." She said.
As conversations continued, Jason observed Jack in the room and went over to him. "Nice suit." he said with a wry grin. "And about damn time you showed up to say hello."
Jack grinned and pulled Jason in for a hug. "I know, I know. But even i recognize i shouldn't just jump in on the middle of a negotiation. But its good too see you. How's the wife? Your actual wife, not Michelle"
Jason returned the favor. "Laura is fine, though I think she wants to be reunited with me soon. She'll be more surprised when she realizes where she's reuniting me to." he said. "What about you? Still causing trouble, kicking ass and taking down names?"
"I am still causing trouble and taking, but I've got a new ass kicker now. There, coming in now" Jack pointed to the mountain of a man that is Roger Stevens. "Poor kid got rail roaded during that Organization bust a few years back. Discharged for something he didn't even know about. So I brought him into the fold. Do you know how useful it is to have a guy who can dent spaceship hulls?"
Jason raised an eyebrow for a moment at the thought... "I, uhhh... Hadn't considered that but... It would be incredibly useful." he added. "We could maybe just use this guy as our entire fleet out here."
"Very funny Jason. He's super, but still mortal. He can't breath in space, and he's still susceptable to leathal force. It just takes more of it. Besides, we don't want an entite fleet of him, that would mean an entire fleet of tortured souls"
Walking in alongside Roger, and just a step or two behind, was the resident rabbitess of the Wellington Valeria Mordin. A fresh uniform, a fresh touch to her hair, and a nice soft shine to her fur as she walked in behind the mountain that was Roger. "Mister Stevens, a pleasure to see you again. How's the foot?" she teased, but with a smirk.
Roger looked at all the uniforms with a bit of envy, but he was far from badly dress. A fitted black suit with black shirt and a security gold tie, A tie clip that too the knowing eye shows his last recorded rank of Lieutenant. He smiled at Valeria "Foots fine, still a bit stiff, but the tingles and pain is gone. Your looking splendid in dress uniform."
"Thank you." she gave a soft smile, "Black suits you. The contrast of the tie makes it truly stand out. An excellent combination." she complimented with a nod, "It's a relief that things are working together so well. Then again, introduce food and spirits to the mix and I've found that most races will disregard their differences in a heartbeat."
She gave a glance to the serving staff and gave a soft giggle, "Drones. When you know a people so well..."
"Drones as staff? I mean that's the highest of luxury right? Though I would still prefer a person, it can be a lot warmer of an interaction, even if it is just food" Roger looks around and the overwhelming amount of food available.
Valeria gave an amused smile, "Go talk to one." she suggested, "Dalacari drones learn through interaction. Military drones forget strategies that keep failing, but social drones... they learn what you like to talk about, keep track of your favorite food... they pretty much become your best friend." she sounded amused at the thought.
"That's not a best friend, a best friend isn't just someone who knows you well. A best friend gets excited when you get excited. A best friend has your back even when its not logical. A best friend is someone you can spend hours with and not say a word and still have a good time. Those are electronic assistance" Roger pointed to the drone.
"Tells you something about the Dalacari, then." Valeria said softly, and all that hint of humor was gone like a flash. That moment hung in the air for a time before passing like dark clouds in a strong breeze. "Ever have Dalacari desserts? You have to eat two at once to get the full effect."
"Huh... yeah i guess that make sense. Are you ok Valeria? I didn't offend you did I? I only ask cause your voice is normally a little sing songy, very upbeat. If subtle, and now its like a storm is coming"
Valeria shook her head softly, and offered Roger a soft smile, "No, you didn't. I'm just, well believe it or not, not very fond of artificial intelligence." she offered, "And... thank you. Sing songy and upbeat." she now offered a slightly more pronounced smile. "I've never been described like that. Thank you."
Roger smiles brightly "I have no idea why, but seeing you smile means the world too me" and his eyes widen again as he realized he out ran his brain again.
Valeria actually gave a bit of a fuller smile at this, "You wear your heart on your sleeve, Roger. It's an admirable quality." she complimented, and stuck by him for the rest of the feast. Mostly just to point out what each of the food dishes were.
Neelor Palim took a look around the room, just seeing everyone sitting and eating or chatting and having a pleasant time. Another successful diplomatic venture, she assured herself while enjoying a pastry.
Another successful venture.
