Location: Sick bay, Animal Clinic Area
Timeline: Current
ON:
Having a double profession as she had made for a duel and busy life. Besides her own pet, there were a host of other pets on board who she would undoubtedly meet in due time. Also, some of them would be strange yet fascinating to study and learn from their visits.
Finishing up with her avian patient, she scrubbed the table and instruments that were used and then sterilized the area for her next guest.
A short time later a faint pawing and scratching on the door to sickbay could be heard followed by a midfield whine.
"What in the blue...", Janice said, taking four steps to the door. As the doors opened she looked down, there was a...what appeared to be a dog but...she wasn't altogether sure what it was but, "Well, what do we have here", she said, without fear she started to rub its head.
"Greetings I am Ensign Layara Hamuul or rather a sub-colony that comprises a portion of the whole it is a pleasure to meet you," said the dog raising a paw in an approximation of a handshake.
Janice nearly fell flat on her face! "Oh my god!", she said, never once backing away from the Ensign...um...dog...that spoke to her, as she shook its paw. Clearly, she was startled, curious, and fascinated by the creature that sat before her. "Um, how can I help you, Ensign?", she said.
"Please do not be alarmed I am here to interact with other new crew members. I also thought it might be prudent to complete required medical examinations since this sub colony is not currently occupied with any tasks at the moment," said Layara tail wagging.
Completely and utterly dumbfounded, "No Ensign, I am not alarmed, only completely fascinated by your species. I am also a licensed DVM, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, and therefore quite ready to complete your physical. Please come this way", she said, as the Ensign followed her to the nearest biobed. "Hop up here on this biobed and let's get started. We can at least get to know about each other while I work", she said, as she started to scan the Ensign. "Tell me a bit about your species and from what world do you come from", she asked, as she scanned his upper body.
"Our homeworld is called if translated literally as All Cradle its location is not revealed for a number of reasons but our colony at Raising Dawn is and most people assume that that is our homeworld. If you are looking for when our culture first emerged it was closer to about 65 million human years ago that we began developing into a technic culture. To be fair our culture was set in motion by the visitors, they helped to set us on the path to the stars," Explained Layara, looking about the clinic.
"I see, not sure I understand, but I am curious about the visitors. It seems that your species is close to our own canine phylum and I am wondering if they have something to do with your genealogy", she said as she took a blood sample to examine and to keep on file. After all this is a new species for her files and Starfleet Medical.
"So far so good Layara, everything I have done so far check out. Just a few more scans and", just then there was a beep signaling that something abnormal had been found. "Oh blast...now what...oh it is your blood test. The scanner found something slightly off. Apparently your ATLC is way over 1000. Now I have absolutely no idea of your true physiology, but were you a true dog you would have been dead by now. ATLC is part of, the canine liver count and well...can you help me on this point?", she asked.
Layara nodded and then started to shift and twist her body splitting and re-configuring in ways that looked absolutely agonizing the canine form had quickly shifted into a large hairless mass a dozen of roughly the same size it vaguely resembled an octopus though with several additional limbs six large eyes blinked in Unison.
"Consider it a quirk of the transformation had I more time the levels would be completely normal," this time the voice was a wet wheezy raspy that seemed to come from the pair of siphons that protruded from her new form. hormone levels fluctuated wildly during the transformation usually those levels become species normal within the first hour through multiple transformations can extend the period of instability," my new form has made the genetic and structural changes but a scan now would still show elevated traces of canine hormones as they have not yet to be reabsorbed,"
on of her tentacles would gently wrap around Lieutenant Sorans hand allowing her to feel the suckers and barbs, to demonstrate that the chance was physical.
"Impressive is it not?", said Layara.
"Impressive indeed...", she said, as a little disbelief crept into her head. "And this is what you would normally look like?", she asked, passing the tricorder again over the Ensign.
"Shape is meaningless to my people as we are colony organisms this, however, was one of our earlier acquisitions we often use it when we need manual dexterity and it has become so closely associated with us. Think of it as a how you say default skin," if you would like to see one of our worlds I can show you but the method may be slightly disconcerting," offered Layara as she pulled her self up and hung from the ceiling supported by four of her limbs.
Stepping back to get the full aspect of the now transformed Ensign, "Now THAT is impressive. What type of creature is that", she asked, now clearly amazed.
A Jivald Resien they are a species that never developed a technic civilization, we adopted the form because it gave us the ability to operate in a wide variety of environments. our original form is essentially a mass of cells that tend to take the form of a black gel-like mass, it is rather plain really but that is the closest approximation we have to an "original form," each cell of the parent colony can enter another lifeforms body and then accumulate and replicate within the host literally turning the host into part of its self, or we can literally alter the hosts biological and genetic structures from the inside out. hypothetically let's say you wanted to change an aspect of yourself we could release some of our cells into your body and rewrite your genetic code and then leave your body. in fact when we first began to make contact with the outside world our skills as doctors were in high demand apparently humans seem to enjoy being tinkered on," said Layara giving a very humanlike shrug with her very alien biology.
"Oh really? Remind me to think about it before I permit you to sample mine!", she said, chuckling. "I believe I have enough information of your bio scans to formulate information for our database. Oh by the way, if I have done this right, you are in perfect health", she added.
"I believe you are correct," said Layara as she dropped to the floor and shifted back into her canine form.
"have a pleasant day," turned and ambled out of the animal clinic.
Once Layara left the clinic, Janice shook her head in total wonder. True this was an interesting species she had just met, but, just what else did the Delta Quadrant hold for her to see? Walking into her office in sickbay she entered the information on the species that she had just gotten from the Ensign into the ships medical database and then took a walk through sick bay checking in on three crewmen that she had helped earlier. Yet she still couldn't find the real reason for being sent here or why...
