Junior had made up his mind to go looking for engineering and to see what kind of place it was like. An upgraded Sovereign class with a fighter deck had to be the best. Of course he was all eyes with the ladies as well but at the moment it was for this lady the Wellington. He needed to get the feel of this engineering bay and all of its new complexities, although he had more than enough knowledge of this type of ship class but still all in all, he needed to get reacquainted with her so off he walked for engineering.
Walking into engineering he nearly tripped over his own feet. "Holy crap! Wow! Now this is what I call engineering!", he exclaimed, to a near by engineer. He did not know who she was but, she did catch his eye and for the moment, more than he wanted it to. "Oh excuse me...I am Junior Chasm Santiago and I am the matter/anti-matter specialist. Buenos Dia Senorita", he said and held out his hand.
"Uno momento por favor." Renee said absently, eyes remaining focused on the schematic in front of her, a wireframe of some subcomponent, making some notations on the screen before tapping a key to save the progress, then turned and automatically extended her hand to accept the proffered hand of... Hmmm... Some new guy, "Buenos dias, amigo, ques.." She screwed up her eyebrows for a half moment, "Cómo estás?" Her forehead relaxed, "I think that's what it is, isn't it? Yo soy Renee Salchin. And that just about exhausts my Spanish!"
"Muy bien senorita Salchin. Yo soy bien. Amazing ship you have here. Es muy linda...that is to say...she is beautiful", he said, taking her hand and gently kissing the back of it gently. "Please do not be offended but from where I come from it is a compliment to be kissed on the hand. I come from Spain and it is our custom to greet such beautiful women in this fashion", he added.
Renee's eyebrows raised before she rolled her eyes and gently tugged her hand away from him, "Well, Lord knows you do know how to flatter a girl." She blushed slightly with a laugh, "So, Junior Chasm Santiago, what can I do you for?"
"Well I was on my way to report in but now that I see you, maybe you could show me around engineering? This is a beauty and my first time on a lady of this caliber. I have been on other class ships and sovereigns but this is an uprated class and she is somewhat different from the straight up and up sovereigns that I have been on. Show me her engines if it wouldn't be to much to ask", he said, giving her the pleasing nod of a look over with a smile. Then thinking, "Oh don't get me wrong Renee, I am admiring your beauty and not trying to hit upon you at all. It is just that you don't find a woman of your beauty and charm in an engineering section these days. Most women are brazen and harsh and unrelenting in their sarcasm, but you on the other hand, have a different quality about you. Some day I will tell you what it is," he said.
"To show you around here, you ask?" Renee smiled, "I think I can do that." She reached out and hit a key on the console to lock it and tucked her hand into the crook of his elbow and patted it, guiding him towards the warp core, "The heartbeat of the Wellington. She's not the newest ship of the Fleet, or the most powerful, but she's sure as hell one of the best! And when I'm done with her..." Renee shook her head, "But that's not important right now. She's had a hard time of late, sabotaged and broken, we're working out some of the bugs that keep cropping up with the transporters, but all of the isolinear and bio-chips have been replaced... I'm going to suggest to the Boss that we strip out all of the transporter software, tear each and every one of the transporters apart, rebuild them, then reinstall the software and go over it line by line... I figure that would take about two, three weeks, maybe more than that."
"Excuse me but you said bio-chips? I know she has isolinear chips but bio-chips? According to the specs she has bio-neural gel packs which require more care than your basic isolinear chips. They are organic and should they become infected, well we both know the outcome. I am no transporter whiz or technician but it would seem to me that if you stripped down the transporter and revamp the original software, you might find that the bugs are not there but in the pattern buffers. Sometimes things get in the buffers that shouldn't and they go un-noticed by standard scans. Running a special cleaning scan for odd ball particles and bio-matter might help you better, rather than take all that time to strip and go over", he said, looking at Renee.
"Absolutely, the Wellington is primarily outfitted with the bio-neural gel packs, but she's also not completely refit, so she's got the original isolinear matrix of the old design. As I'm sure you know, the interface between the bio-neural and the isolinear has a signal degradation that's rather significant over the long run, so developments were made to improve the interface by creating a chip that is binary-linked to specific gel packs, but in a pinch can interface with any of the run of packs. It improves the overall conduction of information to almost maximum." Renee, however, steered Junior away from the warp core, "But we can certainly go check the buffers, in fact, no better time than the present! But even if that's the problem, we can still upgrade the actual equipment on the damned things..."
Allowing Renee to steer him from the warp core, "Agreed Renee, but shouldn't we first ask the chief first?", he asked.
"Meh." She responded, "Yeah, we could ask him, but this is something he'd want to have done anyways, we need transporters that are up and ready to go. If I were going to do any 'interesting' modifications to them, I'd absolutely go through him to pitch the idea, but this is straight forward and he doesn't mind when we're proactive about things! Routine maintenance and even non-routine maintenance? We can be all over that."
"Well, fair lady, lets have at it, shall we?", he chimed in.
“You’re cute.” Renee laughed, “Let’s experiment with ummm... Cargo Bay Two, it’s out of the way except for parts storage...” She reached into her packet and pulled out what looked like a remote and selected a number on the screen, “Hold on to your... Oh never mind.” She swallowed hard once and pressed the button. There was a bright flash before they were suddenly in that cargo bay and Renee swallowed hard as her hearty breakfast threatened to come up violently. It made a second attempt, but she fought it down again, then almost on cue her brain tried to escape from her head as her head throbbed with a migraine she knew would last only a dozen seconds or so as the rest of her body adjusted to the sudden change of location. She looked over to see how Junior had handled it.
"Oh jeez...whoa...what...not feeling to good...ow...mu head. Sheesh so that is a fast site to site? That takes some getting used to I bet", he said holding his gut and head.
Renee shook her head and fought off the headache and patted Junior on the shoulder very gently, "It does, but it really works well." She shook her head again, then took a tentative step forward, then another as she trusted her legs again, "It opens a dimensional shear and doesn't really have a transmission buffer. Sends the signal over the compressed space fast to a dedicated binary receiver. It overloads the receiver after the fact."
Once his stomach settled and his head stop banging, did he say anything. " Yes, that was some ride. Do you get accustomed to it or does happen all the time?", he asked.
"You do get used to it, somewhat. The effects are still there, the headache, the nausea, but you get to expect it and take measures." Renee began to walk quickly over to the transporter, heels clicking on the floor to the console and pulled up the programming subfolder and stepped aside, "All righty, Junior, have at it."
"Oh jeez what the hell happened here?", he said as he pulled up the consoles programming. It is a mess, but, fixable", he said as his fingers moved quickly and gracefully over the console, inputting different commands until the programming subfolder corrected itself and began to function correctly. "There, all fixed, and the pattern buffers are also back in alignment!" he said, satisfied with his work.
"Thank god someone has more knowledge with transporters and all those little details than me." Renee laughed, "Give me a spatula, a paperclip and a piece of gum and I can fix a plasma regulator, but give me a programming glitch like this? I'm all screwed then!"
"Well I guess I am your man, how about a bite to eat? I'm buying", Junior said casually
Renee raised an eyebrow, then laughed, "You don't have any designs on my virtue, good sir, do you?"
"No my dear, only a bite to eat and to get to know each other better. I am to much the gentlemen to do THAT!", he mused.
“Ha!” Renee laughed, shaky my her head, “That is Precisely what someone with ideas would say!” She ribbed him, “Mess or bar?”
"Bar...more of a public place and a more relaxing setting wouldn't you say Renee?", he added, holding his arm for her to slip hers through it. "Shall we, my dear, head to the bar?", he said, with all the charms of the Spanish gentleman that he was.
It would have been VERY uncouth to not accept the arm, so Renee did slip her hand into the crook of his elbow, "Completely platonic, I'm certain, because wouldn't want to break regulations, would we?"
"Of course not my dear. This is a merely a chance for us to get to know each other", he said smiling, as they walked out of engineering.
