Springing Into Action

Posted on Fri Oct 12th, 2018 @ 2:40pm by Lieutenant JG Siobahn Fallon & Lieutenant JG Odelle Lin & Chief Petty Officer Eries Capillon

Mission: https://wellington.pegasusfleet.site/index.php/sim/missions/id/5
Timeline: Just After "Hello From The Other Side"

Lin was stocking medical supplies and doing inventory with the lull in patients or casualties. She had gotten used to having to keep things in a certain order under Doctor Rennan... And so far hadn't deviated from it with the new doctor. She was quietly working when the commbadge beeped.

"Bridge to Sick Bay. Prepare for incoming casualties!" came the Captain's voice. She got up on her feet and headed towards Dr. Soran. "I guess that means us!"

"Yes it certainly does", Janice said. Looking at Siobahn, who picked her head up quickly at the klaxon, she nodded in acknowledgement.

Siobahn slipped through the doors to sickbay about the same time the red alert klaxons sounded. "Well, I guess this isn't a drill then," she said resignedly. "Any idea what's happened?" Hailey followed her in, immediately moving towards the emergency kits, always better to be ready.

"None yet." Lin replied. "I'll get all the triage stuff under way. Just let us know where you want everyone."

"Ladies, I don't' know yet what is coming through that door but let's do it this way to make it easier on us. What if we make one part for minor injuries, one for serious, yet another for critical, and one for burns and still another for can't wait?" she said, looking at her people.

"I'll have O-R Two up and ready in two minutes." Hailey waved towards Eries, who bustled over to the operating room.

Siobahn moved straight into triage mode. Tricorder open as she assessed her first patient. Thankfully, despite how badly injured he looked, it was mostly superficial. Broken bones and contusions, but it could wait at least until they had triaged everyone. "I'm going to give you something for the pain and then I'll be back once it's had time to be effective, okay?" she said gently. "I don't have your medical records, are you allergic to anything?" Receiving a confirmation of no allergies, she administered a strong pain relief before moving on to the next patient, a quick glance around the room leaving her feeling slightly overwhelmed. She hadn't ever seen so many patients in sickbay at once before.

Odelle moved on to the next one. It was more serious... "Can you hear me?" she asked as the patient nodded. "Good. What happened?"

"We were attacked. They came after us too fast." the officer said.

"It's all right. You're going to be safe here." Lin said. "These are all Federation citizens... What the hell did this?" she asked aloud.

Siobahn moved onto her second patient, who even at first glance she knew was in bad shape. Grabbing her tricorder again she started to scan. "Third degree plasma burns to over 80 percent of his body," she said quietly, trying to ignore the muffled, pained groans of her patient. Quickly she made notes on a PADD and summoned a nurse. "Sedate him and have him moved into an isolated clean room. Someone will be in to tend to him momentarily."

Hailey let Eries finish prepping the operating room, then went over to where Siobahn was triaging patients, but diverted to where she saw a young man, eyes glistening, with a gold-uniformed woman, hands pressed down on her upper chest, desperately trying to stay calm, she could tell the difference from her own experience. From a quick look at him, she figured he was standing by a good friend, "Ensign.. Copeland?" She read his nametag, something different, "Let me take a look at you..." She touched his face and turned his cheeks, "You've got some flash burns and cuts. Who's this?" She reached out and took his hand, noting the red on it. She read the nametag on the woman's uniform, 'Setine', then lifted the piece of cloth and a jet of red shot out, bright crimson.

She slapped her hand down on it again and beckoned to the young man to replace his hands gently on it, "Keep that pressed like you did before. A couple nurses are going to come get her and we will get her better, okay? This is what I do, she's going to be fine." She gave him a confident smile because she truly was, then patted him on the shoulder with her non-blood-covered hand. She wasn't sure what else had happened, but this was what would kill this woman the fastest. She waved a hand in an attention-seeking gesture to one male nurse and Eries also rushed over, "O-R Two, I'll be there in sixty seconds. Arterial bleed, I'm thinking aortal puncture but we'll have to see." Eries and the other nurse took over the patient from the young ensign, Eries ushering him to the side.

Janice had her own hands full with a patient writhing on the bio bed hollering in immense pain. Looking at a frightened nurse, "get me a hypo spray of a Hydrocortilene 10cc", she said to the girl who finally did as she was told and got the hypo spray. Janice pressed the hypo spray on the man's neck and almost immediately he became calm and she could tend his wounds. He had plasma burns on nearly 75% of his body and a rather ragged open gaping wound on his side. "I am going to have to stop the bleeding and stabilize him quickly. Nurse prep him for surgery immediately", she said. "Ensign Siobahn, can you keep things under control? I have to preform surgery on this patient immediately', Janice said quickly, as the technicians rushed the man into the surgical bay.

Siobahn faltered at the disrespect, biting down on her bottom lip to stop herself from replying. Now was not the time or place.

Realizing what she had just said, setting her jaw cause she called Dr. Fallon by her first name, "Dr. Fallon I do apologize for using your rank and first name. Something else I will have to get better at", Janice said, irritated with herself.

"I need Doctor Fallon with me." Hailey said very calmly, using Siobahn's last name with her medical designation. Formal situation, formal words, then gave an apologetic look to Siobahn, "Doctor Lin can handle what's going on here, she's senior in any case. I need the extra pair of hands, small hands, aortic puncture or tear. Doctor?" She referred to Siobahn with the last, already moving towards the operating room, expecting the young doctor to follow her.

"Yes Major," Siobahn replied, not entirely sure as to why Hailey would have been specifically requesting her assistance.

"Go ahead." Lin said politely but hurriedly to the Major. "Doctor Ortiz! Doctor Wong! I need you and Nurse Jemal over here, stat." she called out to the other two blue collars who immediately came over. "I've got multiple broken bones and severe internal bleeding. Give her something for the pain and stitch up what you can."

"Yes, Doctor." came the response.

Lin moved patient to patient. Practically none of these were minor injuries. Lacerations, bleeding, plasma burns... Whatever these people got in a fight with, it left a mark. Lin went over to the young Ensign that Major Weston had been talking to. She looked at him... "Plasma burns, broken bones, and a few cuts... We'll have you patched up in no time." she said as she ran the medical tricorder over him. She looked up at him and was momentarily taken aback. He looked familiar... Like he had been here before. 'Not now, Odelle.' she said in her own head. 'You can ask questions later.'

"My friend.. Will she be okay?" Copeland asked.

"Major Weston knows her stuff. She's in good hands." Lin said.

"Lin to Soran. I can get a couple other doctors to take over for me. Do you need a hand in surgery?" she asked.

Janice saw the new face come through the doors, "Join the party Ensign.......", she said, aa she disappeared thru the doors.

Sliding into sickbay, still shrugging into her jacket, Ensign Abigail Fuentez cast a cursory glance around the room, just in time to see the CMO disappearing through closing doors, leaving behind the craziest scene she had seen in sickbay to date. Clearly she was late to the party, but again, that was the story of her life. Her Momma told her she had been late since the day she was born. She cast wry grin at the two nurses who trailed in behind her as she swept her dark hair up into a messy pony tail. "Right, where's our triage queue?"

One of the nurses already dealing with a patient looked up and shook her head. "There isn't one yet, triage hasn't been finished. Grab a patient and jump on in."

Abigail raised an eyebrow slightly, shaking her head as she cast a more discerning gaze over the array of patients, trying to visually determine where to best start triaging at least. "Do we at least know what happened? What we're dealing with?" she asked.

"Nothing concrete," the same nurse replied. "There are a lot of burns, some are pretty serious, Major Weston and Doctor Fallon are in surgery with an aortic puncture, I think Doctor Soran and Doctor Lin have taken a patient with plasma burns into theater as well. We're just trying to get on top of the rest."

"Well..." Abigail grimaced as she moved to the first bed, forcing a warm smile on her face despite the fact that she really just wanted to curse and started assessing what she suspected was going to be the first of many patients.

Eries came bustling out of the second operating room and whispered to another of the nurses, who nodded and rushed off towards that room. Eries came up towards Abigail, "Madame? If you wish for some help, I am available."

"Perfect!" Abigail took a second to contemplate as she glanced around the room. "I'm going to break this down, otherwise we're going to be falling all over each other and getting nothing done. Any nurses who currently aren't hands on assisting, get them taking as much medical history as they can and document it with each bed. Any patient that may be deemed critical that hasn't been triaged will need to be flagged to us straight away. Nurse Capillion, can I charge you with assessing each patient prior to triage for anyone who may need more immediate pain relief to help tide them over until we get to them? I think we're going to need someone to start replicating more supplies, it looks like almost everyone in here has burns of some kind, I don't know how well stocked we are, so maybe get someone to look into that as well?" The whole time she spoke, she continued assessing the patient she had already started working on. Turning back to the young officer on the bed, she smiled warmly. "You're gonna be just fine, I'm gonna have the lovely nurse here give you something to help with the pain and when it's had some time to work we'll be back to see what we can do with these war wounds, okay?"

"I think Doctor Soran is busy in surgery still..." Lin said as she went over to one of the beds where Doctor Wong was. "Need anything?" she asked.

"I need about 30 ccs premafine." Wong replied.

"Got it." she handed him the Premafine and administered the dose. "Lieutenant... Are you still with us?"

"They were everywhere." the woman said weakly. "We couldn't escape..." she added, looking at Lin's uniform. "Who are you? What faction?"

"I'm Doctor Odelle Lin. You're on board a Federation starship. You're safe here." Lin replied as the ship rocked from sustaining fire. "For the most part."

Hearing the comment from the biobed behind her, Abigail turned around curiously. "Who attacked you?" she asked quietly. "Everyone has such severe injuries, anything you can tell is is helpful."

"The Shalti." The Lieutenant replied. "Who else?"

"Damn it to hell!!!!", she said loudy. Janice was covered in blood and angry and had tears in her eyes. She motioned for the two technicians to remove the body.

Lin looked at Abigail and Dr. Wong... "Well whatever they're using for weapons must pack a hell of a punch." Lin replied, trying to keep going. Something didn't seem right about this. But there was no time to waste dealing with the matter at hand.

"Shalti?" Abigail asked quietly, looking across at Lin and Wong with a slightly raised eyebrow before shaking her head and returning to her patient. "I think maybe someone got a few too many knocks to the head..." she murmured quietly.

Lin placed the lieutenant on one of the beds. "Prep the dermal regenerator and stand by for 10 CCs of Aldocin. You're lucky not to be bleeding internally."

Abigail smiled warmly at her patient again. "I'm going to have the nurse give you something to help with the pain. Your burns are mostly superficial so we should be able to get you healed up in no time, but I need to keep checking on others first, okay?" she patted her patient's shoulder gently. "I'll be back as soon as I can." As she moved to the next bio bed, she glanced back at Lin. "Have you ever heard of the Shalti?" she asked quietly, trying to keep her voice as hushed as possible.

"Never." Lin replied. "Makes you wonder what these people have been through. And what's with the odd uniforms?" she asked. "They look different than ours."

"Maybe they aren't really Starfleet?" Abigail countered with a shrug. "At least the name tags make it easier, we know who we're talking to." She turned back to her new patient who was clearly unconscious and non responsive. "Alright Lieutenant Galbraith, let's see what you've got going on."

Lin ran the medical tricorder over Galbraith. "We've got ruptured kidneys, 2nd degree burns and a broken hip." she said. "We'll get him on something to dull the pain but we may need to get you in surgery as well."

Eries came up next to Lin and began to expertly insert another painkiller into her hypospray, having followed the two doctors along the entire way, then pressed it with grace and precision against the Lieutenant's neck, "Oui, Madames, I would zuspect he would need surgery. Madame Docteur Weston is not going to be available for zome time, however, neither will Madame Docteur Soran, but zhe should be available the sooner."

"I guess that leaves..... us." Lin replied as she looked around the busy sick bay. "Guess its a good thing I drank that extra raktajino...."

"The replicator is always on hand for an extra top up," Abigail replied brightly. "And if all else fails, there's always a hypo of adrenalin to get your heart racing," she grinned as she finished speaking, making it clear she was only joking. "We're getting through it, so long as the bridge crew are doing their job and we get no more incoming, we're about half way through!"

A few bio beds down, Eric kept his eyes closed as he listened to the movement and chatter in the room, consciously aware that with every new patient they were drawing closer and closer to him. He could feel his heart starting to beat faster. That was a good thing, maybe it would be helpful. The sweaty palms he kept clamped against his legs, trying to keep his breathing slow and steady as he waited.

Janice looked like hell, as she walked into the med bay. Tired, stressed, aggravated, and totally upset, “Doctors, how are we holding up?”, she said softly. She knew her staff were busy and stressed as well, yet they worked steadily. She had just lost one patient out of two in surgery and it showed. Looking around the busy med bay she walked up to a young man on a biobed who was waiting for help. “Hello I am Dr. Soranson, where were you injured?”, she said softly.

Eric stayed silent, eyes closed, unmoving. Maybe if he didn't respond they would simply think he was unconscious and move on.

“Son, I know when a person is lying and I sense your discomfort, so you might as well open your eyes and stop trying to fool me. I am a Betazoid and I am empathic”, she said softly again to the young man lying there.

Abigail looked up as Janice walked back into the room, raising one eyebrow slightly. "Finished already?" she asked, clearly surprised. "Maybe we should change your name to Doctor Speedy Gonzales," she said with a smile as she moved on to her next patient.

Looking to see who said that, she smiled at the Ensign. “Um...Ensign Fuentes I believe? No a speedy Gonzalez I am not. I lost my first patient in a long time, and took over another for one of the other doctors. Speed in any surgery is not a good thing. I did try to save him but the bleeding was out of control. No matter how many I closed several more opened”, she said, shaking her head.

"Eet is okay, Madame Docteur Soran," Eries placed a very gentle hand on the Doctor's elbow, just enough to let her know she was there, not to startle her, "Not everyone survives and it always hurts to lose a patient. All we can do ees to take a breath and move on to the next one." She gave Janice a reassuring smile, then slipped past, plucking out her little light and gently pulling open an eyelid on the supposedly unconscious person, then alternately shining the light in and moving it away, "Pupils are reactive and normal." She released the lid with a questioning look on her face, then reached out and grabbed his hand, placing fingers on his wrist to check his pulse, normal as well, then scanned him with a tricorder and showed Janice with a raised eyebrow. 'Normal, nothing wrong.' She mouthed to the doctor.

Abigail shook her head. "If he's not in danger right now then leave him and move on," she said with a frown. Something wasn't right, but at the same time, they had actual serious injuries to contend with still and every minute wasted on someone who wasn't dying right now put them at further risk.

"Oui, Madame Docteur." Eries patted Janice on the shoulder, saying without words that the 'step back and take a breath' moment she was talking about should be to just move on and work on the other patients, stepped up to another, "Zees one is having some nerve damage in his right arm, likely from the plasma burn." She'd moved onto the next patient in line, "I'd class heem at a three of ten."

Yes Miss Cappillon, I would say that you are correct in your diagnosis", Janice said moving to another patient. She had plasma burns about her face almost as if her console blew up in her face. "Miss Cappillon, I could use another hand in applying the sterile burn dressings ", Soran said dryly. Yes the stream of patients was beginning to tell on Janice. Not sure if her staff ere feeling the same, she continued to work.

Lin kept going, though she was starting to burn out a bit. When the bridge said casualties, they weren't kidding. She turned to the patient that had been examined earlier by Abigail. She looked at him. Something was way off with him. But she also couldn't just toss him out of Sick Bay and release him to the ship. Right now he had to stay here. She ran the medical tricorder over him... "Did you even sprain your ankle or anything?" she asked.

Eric shook his head, almost imperceptibly. "I don't want to go back," he murmured, his words so quiet that they would have been virtually unheard by anyone except Lin. "Don't make me go back, please...." He kept his eyes closed, his body unmoving, but even the knowledge that this was the moment his fate would be sealed had his heart racing and his blood pressure sky rocketing.

Lin looked at him, concealing her irritation. There were people dying and hanging on for dear life all around him and this guy... She couldn't release him to run about the ship while they were at Red Alert and being attacked, and Security didn't have time to take him to the brig. "If we weren't in combat right now, I'd let Security deal with you." she added. "You seem to have some anxiety, which I can consider an illness or an injury as a result of... Who the hell knows? Take a seat over there. I need to free up a biobed for someone that needs it." she said as she gestured to a bench.

No sooner had Lin finished speaking then the ship lurched and rocked violently again. There were varied shouts and shrieks across sickbay as both patients and medical staff tried to keep their footing and avoid further injury.

In among the chaos, Eric chose his moment carefully to slip out of sickbay completely unnoticed by anyone.

As the ship tossed them about Abigail leaned forward, using her body to brace the patient on the bio bed in front of her, one hand grabbing the arm of Nurse Capillon to help balance her as well. "You okay?" Abigail asked Eries first before looking around sickbay. "Everyone okay? Prepare for a new round of triage folks, It sounds like things are really heating up out there!"
