Janice was sitting in a corner of her living quarters, crying silently. The fact that she lost another patient, and not living up to the way she should for the office she now held, hurt deeply. In all actuality she loved her job, only here on the Wellington it was truly different. Her staff were exceptional people in their fields and when the there was an emergency or crisis they not only worked as a team but incredibly efficient.
Janice felt somewhat out of place with such efficiency by her staff. She was more used to being on the go and not tied down just to sickbay. She also ran her animal clinic as well and that led her to be on the go as well. For her to basically be tied to one place made her sad in that she didn't make or have to many friends. For her, making friends came at to high a price, especially should they get hurt. Self conscious about how she would feel thinking it was her fault was the one thing she would not deal with. Being afraid to get to close to anyone, was something she had problems with when she lost her first patient, her only friend that she was close to, Arianna.
Arianna grew up with her in more ways than most people. Janice went to medical school with Arianna and they both enjoyed studying and working together. They thought of themselves as sisters and got very close. They would swap clothes and the things two true sisters would do. Even their boyfriends were brothers as they entered the Academy. The four of them excelled in their studies and graduated with honors. Janice and Arianna were assigned to the same ship while their boyfriends ended up getting assigned to separate ships.
They got bad news in pairs. It happened fast and thankfully quick and painless for both brothers. There was a fight involving both ships with a band of Orion pirates and both lost their lives. Janice and Arianna were devastated by the news. Both grew even closer with the deaths, maybe to close, when the ship they were on also was abandoned because of a serious core breach. Arianna was hurt seriously and Janice was the surgeon on call that shift. Going into surgery, Arianna was stable, but once the surgery began and in spite of everything she knew and did, Arianna died. Maybe Janice thought she hadn't done all she could have, but in spite of what anyone told her, that she had done all she could, it was something that she could not live with. Janice folded in on herself for a number of months, and in that time she swore never to get close to anyone like she did with Arianna, NEVER….
Picking herself up from the floor, finding the bottle of 16 year old scotch she hid, she got totally drunk...knowing that if the command staff found out…..escaped from the horrible pain life of pain and reality of it…..Knowing of the hangover she would have the next day…..she didn't give a damn!! She hurt deeply….
