The call had been sent out to the Lieutenant Commander as soon as Hailey had gotten out of the surgery on Nyx, just as she'd promised. It had been longer than she'd anticipated, but she wasn't going to take any chances with the Tialan woman, not with the body chemistry she had. As it was, what they'd done was mostly a temporary fix, at least the major part.
She got to the bar before the engineer did and ordered a beer, Guiness being her preference and took a deep drink of it before rubbing her eyes. Surgery took it out of you, something most didn't understand.
J'Loni was very worried about Nyx and was exausted as well. She needed sleep very badly but before anything else, she headed for the lounge. Entering the lounge, she saw Hailey already there and headed for her. "Saw you as I walked in", she said, as she sat next to her. Hailey was just as exhausted as she was, as it showed on her face. She ordered her drink and took a long swig before speaking to her.
So Hailey...may I call you that?", she asked slowly.
"Certainly, ma'am, just don't call me late for supper." She managed a tired smile with the humour in her British accent, "But you didn't come to see what you could call me..." She took another pull on the drink, "She'll be just fine. We need to grow her a new kidney, she also had some of her small intestine removed and she has an internal dialysis implantn until we can get her back into surgery to put in that kidney. She lost a helluva lot of blood overall, but she is stable."
J'Loni heaved a huge tired sigh of relief when Hailey told her that. "Hailey, I am in your debt for saving her life. I was afraid from watching the fight and then seeing how badly hurt she was...I would have to grant her wish as her Keyal and take her life. I am honored to be in your presence as you are a great doctor", she said, as she raised her glass to honor her. "To a warrior doctor I am greatful to be in your presence", she said, and drank her drink. "How long do you expect her recovery to be? Honestly Hailey...don't mince your words...the truth", she asked.
"There is no debt between us." Hailey brushed it off, "She's going to take two days before I am going to let her out of bed, then a week of light duty and I'll re-evaluate. I've seen guys worse off make it, got decorations for a few of them as well as some actions I was in as a combat medic, then a Raider Medic."
"You have no idea of how much this means to me Hailey", she said, as the tears started to run down her cheeks.
"Ma'am, I've seen some guys worse off make it, not many mind you, but I've seen better off not make it. The Lieutenant, Nyx, is strong and in great physical shape. She's sedated for the rest of the evening and through the morning, but I am certain that she'd appreciate a visitor in the morning."
"I will definitely go and visit her in the morning. She will recover in time but with only one kidney? Can she?, J'Loni said.
"Tialans only have one." Hailey shrugged, "Larger and with a bifurcated artery system feeding into it, but just one. My guess is that there are lot of problems with unfortunate deaths due to kidney failures, on the planet at least. But give her a week and she'll at least be trying to be back to normal."
J'Loni nearly fell off the bar stool when she heard that. Of course she didn't know anything about the physical aspects of the species, but to find out that Nyx only had one kidney to begin with was a major shock in it's self. "Oh my god! Do...really can she really live now...with no kidney at all? I mean how will her body filter her blood?", shes asked with an incredible look.
"Dialysis implant." Hailey said evenly, "Only until we grow and 'install' the new one with her genetics. I'm not going to say she'll get back to one hundred percent, that much we'll just have to wait and see. Within a week, she'll have that one put in there, easy surgery, mostly just a replacement transport process with a laparoscopic surgery to make sure the blood vessels are attached properly."
"Are you sure? I know maybe not to 100 percent but are you sure? I don't think I could stand losing her twice, well almost", she said.
"Unless she goes and gets herself stabbed or shot again, yes. I'm actually confident she'll make it back to a hundred percent, but I'm supposed to be a pessimist and say that she might not get back that far." Hailey rolled her eyes and downed the last of her Guiness, "Stupid thing, that is."
Well that might have been the worst thing to say right at that moment. "Ok...what's with the rolling of the eyes and saying behind that what you said", she said. She wasn't sure if the drink had gotten to the doctor or not but regardless, she was beginning to get testy.
"Bloody hell..." Hailey whispered to herself, turning fully to J'Loni, "Doctors are supposed to be cautious about promising that a patient will recover completely, just in case they don't. I tell it how it is, not how they want me to tell it. I've been there when I've told people that they aren't going to make it back alive, those really suck by the way. If someone is going to have problems coming back from an injury or the sort, I tell it how it is. I was a Raider medic, not one of those hospital wankers."
"Look, I know you are not one of those high and mighty doctors and that you have seen it all but, I trust you and your judgement. Now if you say she will be ok, then she will", she said, grabbing the doctor by the shoulders, to look in her face and see her eyes. The look in a persons eyes tell everything. To her, in that moment, the eyes did tell her most of what she wanted to know, what she need to know could only come from how she felt. "What I need to know is how you feel about Nyx's recovery. Will she ever be the same? How do you feel about it", she asked.
"Yes, I have been there, done that. Some other time, ask me about Staff Sergeant Nico." Hailey sighed, "She will. The Lieutenant, from her record and everything I've seen about her, is not going to let something little like almost being killed get her down and out. Give her a couple weeks and if she refuses to get back into training, I'll have a word with her. Bugger that, if she isn't whining or grousing about getting back to training within ONE week, I'll check with her recovery."
In fact, J'Loni did FEEL exactly Hailey was saying and it did finish comforting her. It was what she wanted from the doctor. That feeling of reassurance from someone being absolute in their own mind of a person's recovery or out come of an operation. Letting the doctor loose, "That is exactly what I wanted to FEEL doctor. What you felt! About Nyx", she said, looking at the doctor's face. "The need to feel what you feel!"
Hailey snorted in laughter, "No, you don't need to! Unless you enjoy having your hands inside someone else's body!" That she was joking about this outside of the OR told Hailey she really was getting tired, "Look, You need to get some rest, Nyx needs to get some rest and quite frankly, I need to get some rest. See her in the morning, bring her weapons with you, let her see you've got them. That'll cheer her up, I'm sure."
"Don't worry Hailey I will hun, as a matter of fact, I plan on it doctor", she said, downing her final drink, before getting up to leave. "Thank you Hailey, for saving her life and my friend", she said, leaving the doctor by herself.
Hailey sat backon the chair, then glanced at the chrono on the wall. Eight hours until she planned to be up and about. Yep, time enough for another pint.
