Timeline: Current - After The Unexpected Succession

ON"

Gordo had awakened this morning wondering if the events of yesterday had all been a dream yet knowing that they had not. It had all been real - too real. The explosion of the captain's yacht, the death of the captain and many of the senior officers including the chief science officer, the chief medical officer, and several others. That meant Commander Bowman was now the head honcho of the Wellington - at least for now anyway - and he wasn't sure what that might mean for all of them. If the scuttlebutt about her was true, she was a grade A, number one Bitch and he was glad that his position didn't call for much interaction with her.

One person he had been scheduled to meet with had been the Chief Medical Officer. He'd been ordered to sickbay for a physical and since the CMO was presumed to be dead, he supposed he would be reporting to the Assistant CMO.

'Might as well get it over with...' he thought to himself as he reached the door to sickbay and stepped inside. "Where might I find the Assistant CMO?" he asked the nearest staff member.

"She's in the CMO's office..." was the answer that came to him, along with directions to a doorway across the medical bay.

Nodding his thanks, Gordo walked to the open door where he spotted a tall brunette standing with her back to him.

"Excuse me, are you the assistant CMO?" he asked. Then, as she turned to answer him and he got a look at her, he felt his breath catch in his throat as he saw the face of someone he had wondered if he would ever see again.

"Oh my God..." he half-whispered. "Lia..."

When she heard the voice, the hair on the back of her neck stood and her heart began skipping a beat. She turned around, recognizing him instantly. "Gordo, what a pleasant surprise."

He had first met her on Starbase 723. He had been assigned there as a pilot in their defense fleet and she had been a young officer in their medical department. The last time he had seen her there had been - what? Ten years ago? Gods, had it really been that long? Over about two years' time they had gotten to know each other and had begun a relationship, but as Starfleet was known to do, they were sent in separate directions. And as long - distance relationships are known to do, they had eventually drifted apart and lost contact. Was it possible that fate was offering them a second chance?

He looked at her for a long moment, not trusting his voice to say anything, although there was much he wanted to say. Finally he managed to speak. "You look wonderful..."

Lia let out a soft chuckle and then smirked at him, "Thank you... you are still as handsome as ever." The moment those words left her lips her cheeks stated to get a bit rosier. She looked away from him, as if looking for something before turning back towards him. "So what can I do you for?"

He noticed the blush that crept into her expression and wondered for a moment if that meant some of the old feeling was still there, but quickly tried to push the thought out of his mind. 'Don't go seeing things that may not be there,' he told himself. 'After all, it's been a long time...' Then, realizing that she had asked him a question, he stammered "Huh? Oh, yes. I...uh...I was supposed to report to the CMO for my initial physical but after what happened to most of the senior staff, well...ah...looks like that makes you the acting Chief Medical Officer." He grinned slightly. "Guess that means you get to poke and prod me."

Lia smiled uncomfortably, "Always wanted to be CMO...but not like this..." she extended her arm, gesturing to a free biobed. "Please lay down on the bed. I'll be with you in moment."

"Last time I heard that from you it was in a completely different setting..." he said with a grin as he climbed onto the bed and lay back. "Okay doc, go for it." He tried to relax as he looked at her. She hadn't changed much from what he could see. A bit older, obviously, but still by far the most beautiful woman he had ever known. "So how has life been for you?"

Grabbing the tricorder from the equipment cart, a smile returned to her lips as she recalls the memory of their last night together. She stood by the biobed, looking over his body while the tricorder was conducting scans. "Life has been fair to me for the most part. What about yourself? I hear you have quite a reputation now, and not just for your piloting skill."

"Life has been pretty good to me as well," he answered. "Currently I am second-in-command of the Wellington's fighter squadron with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. As for the reputation, well, you know how that goes - some reputations are deserved, some aren't. I guess it all depends on how you look at it."

Lia nodded, "I can understand that."

As he lay there looking up at her, his mind drifted back to the time they had been together on 723 years before. They had made quite the couple if he did say so himself. The pretty young doctor and the fighter pilot. Their relationship had started as a friendly one, but before he had really realized it he had fallen for her - and fallen hard. He remembered notes - and later longer private messages - between the two of them while on duty as well as off; stolen minutes together any time he could find an excuse to drop by sickbay; dinners for two in the station lounge, sometimes followed by walks hand in hand in the arboretum. The thought of the arboretum brought a smile to his face as he remembered the night in the small grotto with her. Hidden away from any possibility of prying eyes, they had made love to each other and it had been wonderful. Then, his mind coming back to the present, he looked away quickly, wondering if his expression had given away any hint of what he had been thinking.

His heartrate was normal, so was most of his bio-readings. She tapped at the side of the biobed, activating the clamshell that went over his torso. "Just going to do a full body scan." she replied and smirked looking down at him. She remembered the first time she did his physical for practice...she joked around and had him strip his clothes off and physically examined him. It lead to a very satisfying night of passion, quite frankly as she recalled, every encounter with him was satisfying.

"A full body scan, eh?" he asked, a slight grin beginning to spread across his features. "I remember the first time you examined me back on 723. Is this going to end the same way that did?" He had gone to sickbay for a physical and when everything was over, the two of them had gotten rather physical with each other in an unused storage room.

Lia chuckled at his question, "Unfortunately no. It wouldn't look right that shortly after my field promotion I'm caught in the storage room with the squadron commander." She sighed and looked at him straight in the eye. "But, if you would like a physical like that...you could always stop by my quarters after."

"I guess you're right about that," he agreed. "I don't think this biobed would be very comfortable. Although the sofa in your office might do in a pinch," he added with a wink. "But I think your quarters would be even better. And I'm actually the fighter wing commander I'm second in order to Commander Lawson, the Group Commander."

He smiled at her and slid off the biobed as she finished the scan, then came face to face with her. He so much wanted to put his arms around her and hold her close but he knew it wouldn't look professional in front of her staff, so he satisfied himself with a long gaze into her eyes. "As for stopping by your quarters later, you've got yourself a date..." he said quietly. He then started for the exit, but turned back to her just before walking out.

"I have missed you, Lia..."
