Location: Marine Combat Training Center
The Trill faced off against the Tialan, but where Nyx was tensed and in a combat stance, right leg bent and forward, left back, hands down in front of her, Ami Rori, the Trill, was standing there as if nothing at all was going on. Almost the complete antithesis of being prepared for combat. She even had a slight smile on her face, and raised an eyebrow at her opponent, "Whenever you're ready, Nyxie."
The goad, what else could it have been, no matter how lightly the jest had been made, did make the Tialan move. As Nyx smiled, the Trill's face fell to a flat look, eyes dancing and analyzing. The first punch was thrown had seemed to be aimed at the shoulder, but it missed by perhaps two millimeters as Ami moved slightly, hands still staying at her side. An evolution of punches and kicks were similarly avoided by the barest fractions of an inch, one a sweep that forced the Trill to lift her left foot by five inches to avoid it. The first time the Trill moved her hands was to capture a sidekick and move it OVER her as she spun on her left foot and leaned backwards, switching legs and coming back to her standing position.
Nyx was smiling the entire time, enjoying the fight as she always did, then stepped back only to throw herself forward into a somersault towards Ami, popping up after the roll, into another kick that finally clipped the foot of the Trill, but did just about nothing else. She followed it up with a fist that took hairs off of Ami's ear, but was then captured as Ami grabbed the wrist and pulled it as she spun, then a downward movement to throw Nyx off balance. Another flurry of punch and flat-edged strikes only mussed the Trill's hair as she avoided them with the same precision. A display of seemingly perfect defense, all without tensing up except to move.
The Tialan's smile grew grim and she started to extend her strikes, drawing back stiffened fingers, again avoided fractionally and made a leg strike that Ami finally upended her on and as Nyx threw herself back up, Ami grabbed her by the shoulder and twisted the elbow in one direction adn the forearm in the other forcing Nyx to the ground, her arm straight out behind her back in a very painful position. She struggled for maybe a second and a half as Ami put more pressure on it to get her to tap out, then went still.
The arm went limp in Ami's arm as Nyx twisted in her grip and a resounding pop resulted from Nyx's shoulder. Ami was shocked and stayed stil for another second, which was all Nyx needed to put Ami on her back, hooking her leg with her working arm, pulling it up and putting a knee on Ami's neck. It was a second and a half more before Ami reached out and tapped Nyx on the thigh, signalling a surrender. Nyx rolled up off of her and grimaced in some very real pain. "Very good, Milady. You almost had me."
Ami rolled back up to her own feet, moving to Nyx, "Are you kidding me? You just dislocated your shoulder like that?"
Siobahn watched the entire fight from the sidelines, eyes wide as she took in each movement. Despite the fact that they both had a very different style of action, they both made it look so very easy, and then as quickly as it had started, it was over, the sound of Nyx's dislocated shoulder ringing out like a gun shot across the room. Siobahn winced and stood up, waiting until they had separated before grabbing her medical kit and moving in closer. "You seriously didn't do that deliberately did you?" she queried the other woman with disbelief.
Nyx nodded, "I did, My Lady." She even attempted to roll the shoulder in question before stopping after the first motion, another grimace, "It got me the victory." A smile from the Tialan, "A very good fight, however."
Shaking her head and setting the medkit on the floor, Siobahn placed her hands either side of Nyx's shoulder to assess the damage. "It looks like a straight forward dislocation, I can put it back easy enough. Do you want something for the pain first?"
"No, My Lady, there's no need. Pain is only pain and I've had far worse than this." Another smile towards Ami, "It caught you by surprise, did it not, Milady?"
The Trill nodded slowly, "I have never never, not once in my life, seen someone intentionally do that, not in combat, not in practice, never."
"Insanity..." Siobahn murmured softly, feeling somewhat reassured that at least Ami also seemed equally taken aback by the fact that someone was willing enough... no crazy enough to dislocate her own shoulder to win a practice fight. "If you're willin' to go through this for practice, I truly hate to think what you would do in an actual combat situation..." she said quietly. Taking Nyx's arm, she gently moved it up, holding her arm firmly at the wrist and elbow and pulling outward. She winced herself as she felt the joint re-articulating until it finally clicked back into place. "I wouldn't recommend rushin' straight back into battle again, your shoulder will still hurt for a bit. Are you sure you don't want somethin' for the pain?" Siobahn asked again.
Nyx placed a hand on Siobahn's shoulder very gently, "This amount of pain isn't all that debilitating, but I'll heed your advice on waiting for a little, My Lady." She smiled, "It should be fine in a few minutes."
Hailey walked up next to Siobahn as Nyx walked off, rotating the shoulder with barely any sign she was hurting, "Nyx is rather quite special. Very high pain tolerance, warrior versus soldier to be honest, the way she was raised."
"And screw me if she's one to give up." Ami said as she walked up, "I don't think we've been introduced, Chica." She stuck a hand out, "Gunnery Sergeant Ami Rori, at your disposal."
With a smile, Siobahn took Ami's hand. "Ensign Siobahn Fallon, medical officer," she replied easily. "You were amazin'... you both were... but wow..." She shook her head again as she released Ami's hand and looked across at Hailey. "Just so we're clear, I'm a sook, I have no pain tolerance, and there's no way you're gonna get me doin' anythin' THAT crazy! Just.. wow..."
"What about if you defend yourself by not getting hit?" Ami suggested. "Jin Kee isn't illegal to learn anymore, it's what I do. I've actually been a practitioner of it for roughly, oh... Five hundred seventy years? Meh, give or take a decade, it really isn't that much of a difference to me."
"That sounds... more painless?" Siobahn replied with a nervous laugh. "I guess that would be a good place to start... avoiding pain in the first place?"
"It's much more elegant, that's for sure." Ami patted her on the shoulder.
"But those are definitely two different styles, the opposite side of the spectrums. I end up somewhere in the middle." Hailey pointed out, "But what do you think? Want to work with Ami, or with me?" She winked, "There isn't a wrong answer, I promise."
"I think I like the idea of the Jin Kee... I like the idea of just not gettin' hit..." Siobahn hesitated momentarily, "But I think I should probably be able to fight back as well." She looked across at Hailey. "As much as I don't like it, like you said, I can't always count on someone else being there to help... so... can't I do both?"
"Why not?" Both Ami and Hailey said in unison, Hailey gestured to Ami, "You're not a serious fighter and I don't think you're going to follow any one practice? You're just learning to defend yourself."
Clasping her hands behind her back, Siobahn rocked back on one heel as she looked between the two of them. "Well, I guess that's that then... sign me up," Siobahn replied with another nervous laugh. "Where do I start?"
Hailey and Ami traded looks, a series of eyebrow movements the only sign of their conversation, then they nodded in unison, "With me." Ami said jovially, "Just a few days worth at first, then lots and lots of practice. And if you wanted, we could even time our practice sessions for while Hailey is off doing duty-things that keep her out of your bed or you out of hers." Hailey's eyes widened at that and Ami laughed, "Come on now, six hundred years. If I couldn't read THAT off of you two, I should just hang up my hat."
Siobahn's eyes widened at Ami's words and colour flooded into her cheeks as she looked down at her feet. "That would be nice," was all that she managed to say.
"Don't worry, I won't spill any beans about you two chicas, but don't be surprised if others know or find out." Ami shook her head, "Just let me know when you want to start, I'm pretty much free all the time this one isn't running us around." She ruffled Hailey's hair and walked off, "Kids..."
Hailey was also red in the cheeks at Ami's remarks, "Well... Maybe I should get her shot out a torpedo tube?" She joked weakly.
"Long range..." was the only retort that Siobahn was able to come back with, giving Hailey a small smile.
"But she does work elegantly, and doesn't take any time apart from us. And it means, if she handles a bunch of your hand to hand stuff..." Hailey glanced around, "We can sneak off by ourselves."
Siobahn laughed softly and nodded. "Well, that I definitely can't argue with," she said with a smile. She hesitated for a long moment, fidgeting with the hem of her jacket. "I'm sorry if her comments embarrassed you," she finally said quietly.
"Oh, they didn't." Hailey shook her head quickly, "By no means. I just thought I wasn't being obvious about it." She looked away, "Dammit..." She whispered to herself, "Look, I've never been good at keeping relationships. Ever since I really started with any, the longest before you lasted about a week. A bit less than that, I think, but I've never had one that's lasted this long or one that I don't want to have end, ever. I've always sucked at relationships."
With another laugh Siobahn shook her head. "Well, we're in uncharted territory together," she reached out and squeezed Hailey's hand quickly. She smiled wryly. "But she's right about one thing, others will find out, if they haven't already... and I already know not everyone will be happy about it."
That confused Hailey and her muscles tensed, "Who won't be happy about it? Because if they'd try to do something to hurt you because of it..."
"I don't care what they think, as long as you don't care," Siobahn replied quickly. "Hailey, there is only one opinion that really matters to me, and that's yours."
"And the same thing with you, you're my priority." Hailey said softly, slowly, "We could always just tell people or just not tell them and just be ourselves. We're not in the same direct chain of command, despite my position as Second Officer, so we're not breaking Regulations. I just might seem, well, human to others, not the machine they seem to think I am."
"As much as I want to sky write it through the delta quadrant, I like the idea of just bein' us. If anyone knows they know, if they don't, they don't." Siobahn smiled warmly as she squeezed Hailey's hand again. "So long as it isn't goin' to be a problem with any of your positions..."
"It won't. These guys here? Either they won't care or they'll just leave it alone, most of them see relationships as none of their business. the Commodore, the Captain and Commander Tang are the only ones whose opinions about us have any sort of mattering to me, but I don't think any of them would object so long as it doesn't affect my performance." Hailey sidled closer, smiling"And I already know you won't let that happen, after all, you're adjusting your schedule just to be with me, not to mention putting yourself through this because you think it'll make me happy. What makes ME happy is YOU being happy."
Siobahn smiled, "Then we have nothin' to worry about, either of us. Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine," she said softly. Catching the confused look on Hailey's face, Siobahn translated. "Under the shelter of each other, we survive."
"You know what? I like that."
“So do I,” Siobahn replied quietly. “So do I.”
