Mission:

Location: Main Engineering
Timeline: Three Minutes after 'Sorry Babe, Gotta Go'
Thirty-Nine minutes to departure. Oh yes, time was really getting short. But here she was, dressed for a fight that was a good dozen hours away if it were coming at all and she was walking into Engineering about to ask Cor Cordale to give her one of his people, to go to an undisclosed location on possibly hazardous duty and not be able to tell him much of anything about it. She'd HAD to tell the Captain, she broke rules telling Siobahn and briefing in Ami had been a 'safe' situation. But this was another situation entirely. She'd sent her rifle with a grunt to the shuttlebay, so she would definitely be a bit less threatening now. "Chief Cordale?" She asked a young engineer, an Ensign by the single pip on her collar, "Where can I find him?"
Felicie cast an eye over the Marine, biting back the urge to make a smart quip. Instead she pointed across the way to the chief. "Over there, kinda hard to miss, just look for the blue guy," she replied before turning back to the console she had been working on.
"Thank you, Ensign." Hailey turned the corner the Ensign had pointed to, then saw the psychedelic blue weasel-like officer with one arm that was decidedly not natural, "Lieutenant Cordale?" She asked as she approached to ten feet, "I need a favor from you, can I borrow an engineer for up to a week?"
"That's me." He turned as she approached, standing up from his work on a console. "A favor? Well, the last time I did a pretty lady a favor it didn't work out so good." he chuckled, but heard the rest of her request just fine.
"Working on a special project? Sure, need any kind of specialty, and will you be working with anything dangerous? Standard regulations and such." he waved his good hand in the air, like this sort of thing popped up all the time.
"Older Federation technology." Hailey said simply, "In a humid, potentially hostile environment under a rather significant time-crunch. It's actually one of the old Condor-class ships that the Maquis always used, but I don't know what's wrong with it. The problem is the location, which I can't disclose at this time. OpSec."
At the end, that's when Cordale's face kinda fell. "Yeah, had me easy until that last part. Though, points for honesty." he motioned with his prosthetic in a pointing motion. "I'm not a big fan of asking people to go into certain danger. I know it's part of the job, but when you sign up to juggle anti-matter you know what's expected. When you sign up for a hush hush op, you never get that luxury. I've got a few top notch engineers in mind. Can't send Carter, cause she's got a peanut allergy and where you're going may or may not contain nuts." he smirked.
"Carter!" he called out to the Engineering deck proper, and soon enough an engineer approached. Female, human, blonde, ensign ranks. "Sir." she replied.
"Got a side job for you. This marine here is an expert in the field of taking things apart, and is in need of someone who knows how to put stuff back together." he took the jab that everyone took at a marine, but did so in humor. "I'd like you to accompany her squad to her next mission. Do whatever they ask you to do, well not whatever but you get the drill." and Carter gave a smile and a nod, "I follow sir." then turned to the Major and gave a more crisp stance of attention. "Ma'am. Chief says you need an engineer for an off-site. I'm ready in ten. Fifteen if I have to pack."
Hailey smiled in humor, "Primarily if you need any tools, bring 'em along. Expect to be gone for about a week at most, probably less. but there's no massive rush. We've got a good half an hour before we head off ship in any case. I'll be giving a detailed briefing on board once we've departed, but before you outright say yes, there is a possibility of extreme danger if things for wrong, but they're not expected to. You game?"
Carter listened as Hailey outlined the possible danger, then actually gave a smirk, "So, if something goes wrong, there's extreme danger? Sounds just like working with anti-matter." she pointed out with that smirk before becoming serious. "I understand the potential risk. I'll go pack." she turned to Cordale, "Sir."
He gave a nod, and off she went. Cordale gave his chin a thoughtful scritch as he considered, "I may be able to recommend a second engineer, if you think you'll need a pair..." and he turned to the assemblage, "Someone go find Rivero."
"I'm already here," Felicie replied easily, making her presence known. "Sounds like it's gonna be a walk in the park, where do I sign up?" she asked with an easy grin.
"Gah!" Cordale gave a bit of a jump, before turning towards Felicie, "Gotta get you a bell." he took a breath.
"Walk in the park..." Hailey shook her head, "Oh to be young and ready to walk into a fire just to see what would happen." She paused a moment as she then recognized the younger larval officer, "It should be, yes, but Murphy watches over these sorts of things to see what he can screw with. Not going to try to talk you out of it, though, be in the shuttle bay ready to go in about twenty-five minutes. If you change your mind, no hard feelings."
"Don't worry, I'll be there," Felicie replied determinedly.
"Dismissed." Hailey said absently, then looked back to Cor as the ensign went off, "Thank you, Cor... I will keep them safe, as safe as I possibly can. Trust me when I say that makes them safer than walking down the center of the Palace Square." She referred to the square in front of the Palace of Justice on Earth, known for relative safety, despite some pickpockets that called it home.
Cor put a heavy, prosthetic hand on the Marine's shoulder. There was an obvious weight to it, yet, but there was also the weight of loss, of burden, underneath it. When he next spoke, it was a hush. Meant only for the marine and the engineer, and whatever deities chose that moment to listen... "Now... I know, and you know... that impossible promises are as hollow as a jar so I thank you for not making any. I won't ask you to make any, and I certainly don't expect any now. All I can ask is that you don't take stupid risks with them, which I know you won't."
The Thux managed to make the whole conversation actually sound reasonable. He wasn't threatening, wasn't irritated, just a refresher course in 'Please Don't Send My Engineers Into A Minefield 101'. "I know they're in good hands, but as the Chief I'm expected to worry about them and I do." he pointed out. "So treat them good BUT... don't give them special treatment. I've heard stories of what you Marines do to troopers who expect special treatment." and there was the smirk as he lifted his hand off her shoulder.
"Honestly?" Hailey smiled slightly, "Yeah, they'll get some special treatment, but because they're high-value assets in the mission, not because they're meant to be coddled. They really are engineers, not special operations troops, so putting them out in front would just be an exercise in idiocy. I've done this sort of job before and I haven't lost anyone on one of these sorts of jobs, I don't plan on starting this time either."
Cordale gave a nod, "I figured you were going to be treating them careful." he then gave a smirk. "I trust you." and to hear a Thux say those words, there was some weight to them.
"And I'll be worthy of that trust." Hailey opined, "I'll see you when we get back, Chief." She promised before taking her leave.
