Medical Awareness

Posted on Thu Jun 21st, 2018 @ 3:56pm by Major Hailey Weston & Lieutenant JG Siobahn Fallon & Chief Petty Officer Eries Capillon

Mission: https://wellington.pegasusfleet.site/index.php/sim/missions/id/4
Location: Main Sickbay

She felt like she had to be everywhere at once. She'd no sooner gotten back on board when she'd rushed to the bridge to find out what was happening, then the briefing with the Commodore, the Captain and Commander Honn, then back down the tube to where her Marines were to get the update from her most trusted NCO about her new officer and THEN to get them briefed in on the escort mission they were about to undertake. She'd barely had time to take any sort of breathe, much less let anyone know she was back except that she had to run into them.

And there was still so much left that SHOULD be done, whether any of it COULD be done? Well... That's why she was Hailey Weston, determined to do it all. She knew that they had a new senior doctor, one that outranked Doctor Lin, and Hailey supposed that they should have been getting along quite well, emergency plans set up and all, but she'd also had that one meet and greet with Doctor Soran, where she'd been... Perhaps a bit standoffish? Meh, whatever, that was just a first meeting and either way, Hailey was a doctor in her own right and she made the split-second decision to poke into main sickbay to get a feeling of any casualties that were going on as well to make sure everything was ready in case the escort she'd just sent down to the surface either caused or took casualties in whatever was about to happen.

When she entered the area, she saw nothing going on. That was to say, no patients being treated and only a couple of the nursing staff bumbling around doing routine area sanitation and inventorying. No doctors going over paperwork, or just sitting there on a PADD playing a game and waiting. And the senior nurse was... "Nurse Jenkins, where's Eries?"

"She's down in sickbay Three, headed there with Doctor Fallon to handle that side of the ship for routine preparations for emergency treatment." The male nurse mentioned.

Hailey nodded, but it still didn't make sense... She walked into the CMO's vacant office and pressed the annunciator that was dedicated as a group link for the entire medical staff, nurses and doctors alike, "Doctors and senior nurses to main sickbay immediately. This is not a medical emergency." She keyed off and sat on the desk, crossing her arms as she waited. She was in a rush, figured she had about ten minutes to spare, maybe a few more if needed, but she wanted to be sure everything was in place... It was HER troops on the line right now and she had a duty.

Siobahn recognised the voice immediately and cast a quick glance at Eries. "Leave this as it is," Siobahn said with a smile. "We can come back and finish this inventory later."

A few moments later, joining the small assembly in the main sickbay, Siobahn grinned as she saw Hailey for the first time in what suddenly seemed like forever, the smile faltering as she took in the expression on Hailey's face. "Major Weston..." she said quietly as she stepped to the back of the group.

"Ensign Sioban, um...have you gathered the inventoried supplies I requested to be brought to Transporter Room 3 for any incoming injured from the surface? I need them now. CPO Eries, have you finished with the extra hyposprays and all the analgesics and antibiotics that were requested 20 minutes ago in Transporter Room 3? Oh an both of you bring plenty of (when I find the name I will put it here). We are bound to have serious burns as well", she said.

Siobahn blinked for a moment, processing what was just said, tilting her head to one side ever so slightly, her eyes widening momentarily as surprise registered on her face. Almost immediately her expression darkened. "Actually, that would be Ensign Fallon, even if you can't show enough respect to introduce yourself properly at least have enough respect to get my name right." The cold tone of her voice only served to highlight her fiery irish accent. "Secondly, I've not received any request from you to do anythin'. ERIES and I have prepared sickbay for any incomin' casualties that will be transported directly to us. ERIES and I are prepared for any emergency that may come up, just as we were prepared for the last one, WITHOUT your help." Turning back to Hailey, Siobahn's expression remained dark. "Rest assured Major, Sickbay is ready for what ever might need to be done, even if I am just a lowly Ensign."

“Merde...” Before Hailey could even acknowledge anything, Eries had pulled out her PADD and activated it, scrolling down it, "Madame Docteur Soran, I do not have any requests regarding hyposprays, analgesics or antibiotics at all." She shook her head, continuing on in her heavy French accent, "I was with Madame Docteur Fallon the entire time, prepareeng zickbay. Zees was after zhe and I took care of ze cazualties from ze alert we had." She lifted her chin, biting her tongue out of respect for the senior rank of the doctor, despite that it had come over the comm rather than someone in person. She too was also rather offended by the address. Proper etiquette would have been either 'Eries' if it was a familiar setting, 'Nurse Capillon' or 'Chief Capillon' if it were formal. But she couldn't say that out loud, it wouldn't be proper etiquette.

Siobahn cast a glance at Eries, grateful for the reassurance that she wasn't the only one set offside by the fact that the way it looked, not only was Lieutenant Soran attempting to completely gloss over the fact that she had ignored a large part of the medical department, she now seemed to be attempting to throw them under the bus to make herself look good. Clasping her hands firmly behind her back, Siobahn held her head high, her expression still steely, not even bothering to look around, genuinely fearful that if she did, she might not be able to help the next words that came from her mouth.

Janice realized that both were correct and could sense their distaste and possibility a bit of anger, handing the PADD to a nearby technician, she headed for sickbay.

Entering sick bay, she saw the Major there along with Ens. Fallon and Lt.Jg. Lin, and CPO Capillion. "Ladies I must apologize for not meeting with you sooner but I was otherwise engaged and could to be here before the orders from the captain to prepare for possible incoming injuries. I am sensing some hostility and anger from you. First of there was no time for orders to be sent by me giving you instructions as to what was needed. Second, I have complete faith in you to do your jobs accordingly. Third, I had hoped that after this mess, we could sit down together and get to know each other in a different setting.”

Hailey watched from the office she was leaning against, gauging things for a moment, the redness on Eries’s face, the set of Siobahn’s jaw, some cues from the other medical personnel. “All right, I see we aren’t quite ready yet.” She used as light a tone of voice as she could, then rectified the mistake that had happened and started giving orders out,”Odelle, take Artorious and station yourselves in Sickbay Three, the ground situation isn’t resolved and I don’t know how many or what casualties are coming. Siobahn, take Eries and go down to the Marine sickbay, get that one ready. Hardin,” this one was to an ensign whose face went pale, “Get the list from Doctor Soran if the supplies needed for Transporter Room Three and expedite them.” She specifically didn’t give an order to Janice, an indication for her to stay for the moment.

The pasty faced ensign nodded and went over to Janice while Eries shot a look at Hailey before going over to Siobahn and flashed a smile to her and handed her PADD to Hailey.

Lin saw what was going on and motioned the medical team and others away from observing the discussion. Right now, there were patients to treat. She turned to Chief Capillon and Ensign Fallon... "We can worry about whatever conversation is being had. Artorious, you're with me. Everyone, let's get back to work."

Siobahn's expression remained stone cold as she cast a glance over Lieutenant Soran, about ready to tell her exactly what she could do with her apologies... and it involved pineapples, dark places and hopefully lots of pain. A soft hand touched her forearm, followed by a quiet 'come' from Eries. With a nod to the nurse, Siobahn cast one more glance at Lieutenant Soran. "dtuitfeadh an tigh ort," she said quietly, more to herself than anyone else, before giving her full attention to Eries and attempting to offer a smile. "I'm not sure how well stocked the marine sickbay is," she said quietly. "We should grab a couple of full field kits before we head down. Anything else we need we'll send someone back for."

"Hyposprays and a surgery kit. Just in case." Lin replied. "I'd rather not lose anyone having to do an emergency beamout."

Siobahn nodded in agreement, grabbing the extra supplies with Eries before heading out into the corridor.

"Well Major that did not go well. I did try to explain my confidence to all of them but it didn't go well. I guess there re still things I have to work out with them", she said dejectedly.

"No, Lieutenant, it didn't." Hailey shook her head, "And I don't think they believed when you said you had confidence in them, not because you don't, but because they don't see you and can't gauge you properly. I have to be on my way back to the bridge in a couple minutes, but can I tell you what I saw and heard in there, Janice?" She offered up the given name to take it a bit more informal if the other woman wanted it.

"Go ahead Major, you know them better than I and your input would be appreciated", she said, a bit dissapointed with herself.

"First, take a seat." Hailey waited until Janice had sat behind the desk, "You're a stranger to them. Just as an example, you were off where? Getting things ready, but away from here, main sickbay." She patted the desk, "Here is where you NEED to be during any state of crisis, especially if you're needing to get ready for any casualties, here, on the planet, anywhere. Especially since Lieutenant Circe has been distant, even when I first came on board."

Hailey leaned up against the desk, hands flat on it, "Which means that unless she comes out of whatever's affecting her, this place is effectively yours. You have people to go fetch things, deliver others, organize other sickbays. In an elevated alert state, like what's going on around Reh'nar here, this is the place you need to be, like a spider in her web. Is it exciting? No. Is it even interesting? No. But you're the leader, the one who every other medical officer or NCO is going to be looking to if there's a need for direction. You can't do that if you're delivering supplies or checking inventories away from Main Sickbay here."

The Marine pushed herself up off the desk, "But the other part of being a leader is knowing your people.I think you've been here almost a week? More?" Hailey waved it away, "But did you know that Ensigns Siobahn Fallon, Harvin Hanson and Emma Rogarin are on their first cruise? Fallon is from the Academy on Earth, Hanson and Rogarin are from the Academy on Betazed, though Hanson is human. They need a leader, a role model. And that's going to be you. Chief Capillon is your head nurse and she is absolutely amazing, has a daughter named Aurore that she adores. But the biggest thing: Take time and get to know your other doctors and at least some of the senior nurses. Take them to dinner? Work with them on a project, a few hours of seeing patients with them, something like that."

"You are absolutely correct Major. I don't know them like you do and I want to get to know them. I am not sure if we have the time to call a short meeting now or not", she said. "What would you suggest?", she added.

"Right now? Nope, not a good time. We're in a relatively hostile situation and they need to be ready for whatever comes and that means basically keeping them busy and making sure they take some breaks. You're the spider in the center of the web, don't do trivial tasks like inventorying supplies, delivering supplies, anything that you can delegate. That's why you have ensign doctors and non-commissioned nurses, because they aren't responsible for every medical facility and every person on board this ship. You are, until or unless Lieutenant Circe is capable of returning to her duty." Hailey nodded slightly, "So what I'm going to suggest is that after we finish with whatever crisis we have going on right now? Take time to get to know them. The Ensigns should be pretty easy to deal with, though Ensign Fallon has a bit of a temper from what I've seen. The way to her may be through Nurse Capillon, the Nurse seems to have taken Fallon under her wing. To get to Eries, if you can get a fruit basket of real mangoes, bananas and pineapple? She and especially Aurore loves those things, maybe even pander to Aurore with a stuffed animal or something." She thought for another moment, "Odelle is pretty easy-going and keep the rest of the nurses fed with pastries and muffins and they should settle in with you nicely too."

"Ok so what you are suggesting is that for the time of this crisis, is basically stay in sickbay and delegate. I guess I can do that, but I am a hands on doc", she said.

"Hope there isn't any major hands-on work to do." Hailey said quietly, "But yes, you're the brain in sickbay. Any injuries will most likely come here, that'll give you hands-on. You're not an engineer, so you can't work at damage repair, we have pilots to fly the ship and shuttles, scientists to deal with that shit. You're a doctor and even just as Assistant Chief of Medical at the moment, a manager. That's the curse with being a Department Head, Doctor Soran, you become more an administrator than an actual hands-on doctor. I'm doubly screwed since I'm both the Marine Detachment Commander as well as Second Officer. Double the administration. And I don't get nearly enough time here to keep my own medical skills where I want them, so I've got basically no personal time."

"Well I guess we will have to make that personal time. I would hate to have you here as a patient Major", she said, with a soft chuckle.

"With all due respect, Lieutenant, consider me an exception to the rule?" Hailey smile weakly, "As I say, I don't have any significant amount of personal time of my own. I'm sure we can get to know each other when we're meeting on official business or when I come in to spend a couple hours here or there treating patients. I am, after all, a trauma surgeon. One hundred percent licensed to cut you open and weld you back shut again when I'm done. Even under the worst conditions."

"I understand you clearly Major. It is also my duty as the Chief Medical officer to worry about all of the crew and that includes you as well. However, I know you know your own limits so I won't worry to much bout you. Should something happen to me on the other hand, please make damn sure you put me back together please!", she said with a chuckle.

"Hell, I did a nephrectomy on a shuttle that was in warp and done multiple surgeries under fire in combat. I think recreating a jigsaw puzzle of a person under the lovely, clean conditions of a sickbay would be a treat." Hailey pushed off the wall and sighed, "But, I've tarried here a bit too long, Lieutenant, I should have been back on the bridge a couple minutes ago."

"Yes and I have work here to do myself. We can chat later. Just don't get caught with your foot in your mouth...so to speak", she said chuckling and waving at the Major.

"Better than putting my foot in my mouth for real." Hailey chuckled, heading out the door.
