ON:

With the twins asleep, she sent off her report to the Chief letting him know she found and fixed the magnetic constrictor on the EPS tap that was the cause of the problem.

Getting up, she went to the replicator and got a double hot chocolate and a piece of blood pie and sat on the couch looking out the window. She began to eat and suddenly she felt very small and alone. With the news of Mark's death while on his last mission, it was a major blow to her. The news was delivered directly to her not long after she was posted to the Wellington, and by Admiral Jamison, Mark's superior officer. Of course he was cordial and sympathetic and all the usual bull, but it still didn't bring the kids daddy home. How the hell was she going to explain this to two 9 year old children?

What ever happened to the good old days when things were so much simpler? Then you knew what was what and now...things are worse. How could they have gotten so bad in such a short time, or in this case long time. 15 years, and things go crazy year by year. Between the Dominion war, the Klingon civil war with Duras...what was next? War with the Delta or Gamma quadrants? Then there was the Borg...yes the Borg, and rogue Remen’s and Romulan’s and so on. Who would start something next. No one knew and it was somewhat upsetting to her being an engineering specialist herself.

=============Some 15 years earlier to the Present=============

T’Ponga was sitting in her quarters when the red alert klaxons went off and she flew into engineering only to see her boss laying on the floor bleeding badly. Apparently the Cardassisan's decided to attack first and nearly blew out the engineering section. Besides her boss, there were several others who had been hurt. She was fresh out of the academy and if it hadn’t been for the teachings of her father, everyone would have died that day. This was the beginning of the Dominion War and she was right smack dab in the middle of it now.

The Dominion war was horrible and she had enough of it when the treaty was signed and it ended and she was glad. She was transferred to another ship where she was promoted and got the position of Chief Engineering Officer. She nearly jumped for joy because it was a life long dream to become a CEO. The captain of the ship said she was the first raw cadet that went through the Dominion war who was as young as she was to be promoted to CEO.

Through the years, she did her job well and on the last ship she was on she married the man of her dreams and had twins and she finally had her family. However, because of her outstanding record and her ability to command, Starfleet saw it fit to take her from her beloved engineering and make her captain of the USS Don Johnson, a Nebula class ship. Of course she was honored but she protested about being pulled from engineering. The hierarchy of Starfleet Command won out on this one and gave her no choice other than do the duty of a captain of the ship or resign her commission. Tough decision for her, but with her husband as her XO it wasn’t to bad until…

Mark had a background of infiltration specialist from the Academy and SFI pulled him from the Don Johnson without her knowing it and didn’t tell her about it until a week later. The twins had been born and were 6 months old when this happened so they never really saw their father for six years until one day Mark popped up on SB257 where she had resigned her commission and was living for the present. The family reunion was beautiful and wonderful for about a year. Mark told T’Ponga about it and attempted to repair their marriage but it was cut short by another assignment. This time, they had time to say good bye and once again they separated.

She stayed on the base until the children were about 9 when she decided to return to duty and she got her assignment but much to her surprise she was reinstated as a NCO and that really hurt.

Yes she sat there remembering all this and when she remembered the part about being given the assignment of NCO it killed her. How could Starfleet Command do this to her? A decorated officer, being assigned as a NCO, who’s life was dedicated to engineering and command? It hurt her to the very core, yet she couldn’t complain cause she was the ACEO here on the Wellington and it was in engineering.

About six days after she was aboard, she got word that Mark had been killed, where he once had been placed as MIA. Between the rank reduction and now the word that her beloved Imzadi had been killed sent her into a tail spin.

She dropped the mug that had the chocolate in it and burst out into tears. She started to cry loud enough for both her children to come out from their rooms rubbing their eyes. “Mommy, Mommy, what happened”, said her daughter.

“Mommy, please what has happened”, said her son.

Looking at both children, she hugged them tightly and cried on top of both of them. How could she tell both her children that their father was dead? How in the name of hell do you explain this to them and now at their age?

“Both of you sit please next to me as I try to explain this to both of you”, she said, looking at K’Vas and T’Pring. “I don’t know how to explain this to either of you but, do you remember that long ago I told you stories of how we sang songs about our departed warriors and how we howled them into Sto’Vo’Cor?” she said. Slowly both children nodded. “Well...your father...”, she couldn’t do it. How do you get the strength to say that your father is not coming back?

“Mommy please, please…”, said K’Vas.

“Ok...your father has gone the way of the warrior and is in Sto’Vo’Cor”, she said and broke down again crying on top of both of them again. Now the scene in their quarters was one of sadness and loss and most of all loneliness.

“Mommy,”, K’Vas cried, “Daddy is dead...Nooooooooooooo!” he roared.

“Nooooo I don’t believe it…no it is not true….it is a lie...he is not dead, Mommy
please tell me he is not dead, mommy please”, pleaded T’Pring.

“Yes children, your father is gone and never coming back”, she said, crying, now nearly hysterically. Both children hugged their weeping mother and all three were weeping now. It was a moment of sheer hurt and loneliness for a family to lose their father and her devoted husband. They were for all intense and purposes alone in a world of unknowns.
How was she going to raise K’Vas with out a father figure? How was she going to even try to raise her daughter without a father figure to guide her in the ways of being a good and wonderful woman. As for K’Vas, who was going to help him in school and play ball with him and take him hunting and all the things a father would do? She had no idea and for the time being she was a single parent who had no idea of how to do this alone. Yes at this moment in time she was alone and this also brought on the thoughts of being left out of her element in engineering. All of this was building into a world of loneliness for her that would eventually overcome her and set her back and she knew it would but how to get out of it? For the first time in her life she felt completely alone in this world and it hurt.

“Mommy who is going to teach me base ball? Who is going to help me with my weapons training and my school work”, K’Vas said, through tear stained eyes and pained words.

“Mommy, who is going to take me to dancing school and watch me do my ballet?”, said T’Pring, looking at her with tears in her eyes.

Shaking her head she had no answers for both her children and just hugged both of them, crying silently.
