Location: Sickbay
Timeline: Current
Having finally finished in the Marine sickbay with Eries, and having received confirmation that there was no longer a threat to be concerned about, Siobahn made her way back to main sickbay.
She was tired, aching and wanted nothing more than to take a very long shower and wash the dust away and then curl up and maybe sleeping for the next hundred years.
Returning the medical kits they had taken with them earlier, Siobahn made sure everything was put away neatly before she made her way into the CMO's office.
"My reports on the lack of activity in the marine sickbay," she said quietly, dropping a PADD on the desk in front of Janice before turning on her heel and heading back toward the door.
"Um....Ensign Fallon", she said, looking up. Siobahn did look tired and a tiny upset, but Janice knew that it moght not be a good time, but the Major had made a bunch of good points. "Can I prevail upon you to have a seat for a few minutes?", she asked. Offering a padded chair she waited till she had sat.
Sinking into the indicated seat, Siobahn crossed her legs neatly and folded her arms across her chest, trying not to appear at least outwardly hostile, but still clearly unhappy.
"First let me say this, I am sorry if I offended you earlier today. I realize that my place is supposed to be in sickbay and not off giving orders like a drill sargent. I realize that you and the others here in sickbay are here longer than I and I should have taken the time to talk with all of you first before barking orders. Now I know you have some, shall I say, choice words, I know you wpuld like to get off ypur chest. So let it out", Janice said, settling back in her chair to wait for what ever Siobhan was going to say.
Siobahn quirked one eyebrow slightly, that being the only change to her otherwise sullen expression. "You want me to speak freely?" she asked, disbelievingly. "I would get thrown in the brig if I said what was really on my mind."
"I value what my officers have to say and usually I encourage them to speak freely when they can short of insubordination, but in this instance, yes", she said.
"Alright..." Siobahn paused for a moment, gathering her thoughts and trying to decide how honest she really wanted to be. Finally, she opted for just speaking her mind. "I think you are an arrogant, self centered, egotistical bitch with little to no regard for anyone in your department other than yourself. I think if you had any respect for anyone working with you, you would take five minutes to introduce yourself to those you expect to schlep around after you, or at least use their names properly when addressing them. I think if you expect people to treat you with respect then you need to have respect for them first, and so far you seen to have none. You ignore us, then swan in and throw around a few demands and expect us to immediately kowtow to your demands?." She drew in a quick breath. "You know what, I might just be an ensign, but I happen to think I am damn good at what I do, and I will be damned if I am going to stand aside and be disrespected by someone who can't be bothered to even address me properly, and if being a medical officer in Star Fleet means I have to put up with disrespect, then consider this my resignation and I'll be on the first transporter back to Earth." Siobahn held her head up high, her steely gaze meeting the the officer's eyes.
"Well Ensign Fallon, I guess I deserved that and if I hadn't urged you to speak freely, I would throw you in the brig for insubordination. Yet, for this reason I am not and won't. I don't want to lose any of my medical personnel over this, so is there a way we can smooth things over a it bit so we can talk and see how we can get along with each other?", Janice asked Siobhan, looking into her eyes.
"I was raised to respect others, I will treat you with respect if you treat me with respect," Siobahn replied simply.
"Very well Siobahn. I too was raised that way so I guess we could say that I have been a silly fool of a 'quack" to move in on others jobs", Janice said, looking to see if Siobhan had calmed down more. "Can we begin a new?", she added.
"I'm willing to give it a chance," Siobahn replied calmly. She leaned back in her seat, her arms still folded across her chest.
"Can I offer you a drink Ensign? Perhaps something stiff since we are off the clock", Janice asked.
"Alright, I guess it won't hurt..." Siobahn's stance changed, she relaxed a little, her arms unfolding and her hands moving to sit neatly in her lap.
Smiling a bit, "What is your poison? Mine is Bourbon on the rocks", she said, as she walked to the edge of the desk, leaning down, she produced a bottle of New Orleans Bourbon and held it high. "Want a glass", she said, standing up and getting two glasses with ice, walking back to her chair. As she poured hers she motioned to Siobahn.
"I'm willin' to give it a go," Siobahn replied, taking the glass that was handed to her. She swirled the bourbon around in her glass, listening to the sound of the ice clinking. "Why did you become a medical officer?" Siobahn asked calmly. "I mean, if you come aboard a ship and then spend all your time NOT in sickbay, why take the position in the first place?"
"I know it sounds crazy and probably would not make sense but medicine is in the blood. It started with animal medicine and from there it went to human medicine. Once out of the academy it was to a starbase. On the starbase I wasn't in sickbay much", she said. "Then while I was on the ship I served on, I really didn't spend much time in sickbay either because he darling captain", she sneered, "Decided to send me on all the away missions wether not I was needed or not. Thus I was never really in a working sickbay like here. It will take a little getting used to for me. However I am a doctor in both human and animal medicine and from the roster I saw the need for both might exist", she finished. Now looking at the Ensign, she took a long drink of burbon. "Smooth....", she said. "You Siobhan? What made you take the medical field?", she said.
"I guess that's the difference," Siobahn replied quietly. "I knew from when I was a very young child that all I wanted was to help people and I can't imagine taking myself away from sickbay. This is where I want to be, here, on a grass roots level, helping people, where I know I belong."
"And that is exactly where you are. Here, on this ship, helping people. I whould kick myself in the ass if I thought it would do me any good. However, all I ever wanted to do as a kid was help heal and make sick animals and people get better. That is why I chose both fields. I had no idea that I would ever need to help animals out here until I landed on a ship and Starbase", she said quietly.
"I guess the thing is, if you're going to be moving toward leading the department, which is what gossip says, then you need to be here. You need to make the choice as to whether you want to lead a medical team in sickbay you need to be in sickbay." Siobahn shrugged slightly. "Maybe I'm wrong, I've only finished my undergraduate, I'm still doing my specialties, and this is my first assignment since leaving the academy, but what I do know is that when we had a red alert, I was the only medical officer in sickbay. Do you have any idea how confronting it is to be thrown into that situation without anyone to look to for guidance? All I can say is thank God for Eries."
"Yes, I have read her jackst and she does have an exceptional background in medicine. And, yes I do have a very good idea of being tossed into the fire without the extinguisher. It is not easy at all", she said, a tear formed and fell. "It...well...no it isn't easy at all", she finished, brushing the tear away. Janice sighed and took a long drink before she looked up again. "Didn't mean for the tear to fall or to get rattled. For that I am sorry", she said, getting up suddenly. She had remembered her own baptism of fire when Siobahn spoke about her own experience and it did shake her.
"Have you thought about what you might do when you finish your specialties?", sje asked, walking around her desk, stopping next to Siobahn.
"I'm specializing in pediatrics so I can go most anywhere. Starfleet has assured me I can remain on starships as long as I want, so I guess it will come down to other factors." Siobahn shrugged slightly. "Balancing work life and personal life and all that."
"Well personally, I would like you to consider staying on the Wellington. The ship could use a good pediatrician who also can double in sickbay if needed. We never know if we are going to treat children", Janice said.
Siobahn raised one eyebrow slightly as she looked across at Janice. "You do realise there are already several children on board, right?"
"Yes I do which is why I would want you to stay", she said, looking at Siobahn. Janice was hoping that she would stay. She needed someone who would help her adapt to the life of being in sick bay and not galloping all over the ship.
Siobahn smirked slightly. "Well, I guess it's a good thing for you that right now I have other reasons to stay," she said quietly, her mind turning immediately to Hailey, a small smile dancing across her lips at the thought. "I would also suggest that you speak to other members of sickbay and smooth over other hurt feelings, because I can assure you, Lieutenant, I'm not the only one who has been hurt by your perceived indifference to the staff here."
"I fully intend to and thankyou for chewing me out", Janice said.
Siobahn laughed softly, her first genuine emotion of the entire interaction. "Thank you for not court martialling me," she finally countered.
"Duely noted...", she said, laughing softly. "Grab another glass on the way out. It is on the house!", she said smiling.
