Location: USS Wellington Brig
Siobahn walked into the brig, looking around uncertainly. With all the chaos going on around them, the most senior staff in a secret meeting and most everyone else still tending to the patients that had come across from the Icarus, it had somehow fallen to her to go down to the brig and check over the patient that had absconded from medical.
"Ensign Siobahn Fallon," she presented herself to the security officer standing guard outside his cell. "I've been sent down to check over your... uh... guest?"
The security officer's mouth quirked in a slight smile. "First time in the brig huh? Well, at least you're on the right side of the forcefield. I don't think he's dangerous but if you have any problems just give me a shout, I'll be just over there," he said pointing to a station maybe fifteen feet away.
With a nod, Siobahn entered the cell, gripping her medical kit tightly, a wave of doubt washing over her. "I'm Siobahn, one of the doctors you ran away from," she managed a small smile. "I need to check you over and make sure that medically you're okay to stay here."
Eric looked up from the bunk he was sitting on, his face almost devoid of emotion. "Does it make any difference?" He asked dully. "They'll send me back now anyway so it's only a matter of time until I die."
Siobahn's eyes widened slightly at his comment and she sat down on the bunk next to him. Pulling out a medical tricorder, she scanned him quickly. "You seem to be in good health, I don't understand, how did you even get transported over with the medical emergencies?"
With a vague shrug, Eric continued to stare at his hands on his knees as he spoke. "Lieutenant Carter was already dead before the medical transport was even initiated. I swapped our commbadges."
Opening her mouth to speak, Siobahn hadn't even made a sound before she closed her mouth again. Her first reaction had been to admonish his actions, which clearly was the last thing he needed right now. She shook her head instead. "I can't even begin to imagine what you have all been through," she said, thinking back on the injuries that came aboard from the Icarus. "It must have been a massive battle."
"Twelve years," Eric replied quietly. "Twelve years of constant war, constant battle, constant death. The Shalti have destroyed everything and everyone in their path. They are like a wave of death washing over the universe. No one is safe. That's why I don't want to go back."
"Oh..." With that, Siobahn had the sudden realisation of his situation. She put her medical tricorder back into her medical kit and snapped it closed.
"Don't let them send me back," Eric looked up, staring directly at Siobahn, his voice filled with emotion for the first time since she had entered the cell.
"I honestly don't know what's going to happen," Siobahn said gently, setting the med kit on the bunk between them. "I have to tell them that you're not injured, after that, I don't know. I guess the decision will be up to your commanding officer."
Grabbing her wrists roughly, Eric held her her hands firmly, making her wince with pain. "I can't go back, I won't!" his voice rose. "I am not going back to that war, if you want to kill me, do it here, now, just don't send me back there!"
Siobahn tried to pull her wrists free of his grip. "You're hurting me," she said quietly, trying to keep her voice low enough so as to not alert the security officer. "Hurting me isn't going to help your cause."
Realizing that she was right, Eric let go of her wrists and dropped his head into his hands, exhaling deeply. "I'm sorry," he said quietly. "I... I just..." he looked across at her again, the expression on his face becoming one of a man beaten. "You don't know what it's like..." He shook his head briefly before lowering his head into his hands again. "Just go, tell them what ever you must."
Grabbing the medical kit, Siobahn stood up and moved away from the bunk quickly. "I have to tell them the truth," she said quietly. "I'm sorry." Walking away quickly, Siobahn barely managed a smile at the security officer as she was leaving the brig. She had to tell the truth... she just didn't know what the truth was going to be.
