Location: Sickbay
As the doors in sickbay parted, two officers in gold tunics appeared, who were supporting what seemed to be the near lifeless form of a young male patient. The unmarred shoulder of his uniform showed a teal tunic, and not immediately recognising the face, Siobahn assumed he had to be from Science.
She motioned toward the nearest biobed quickly, helping to get him positioned. "What happened?"
One of the security officers shrugged slightly, stepping back. "We just found him, down near the nacelles. There was no signs of any kind of damage anywhere, but we're going to engineering next to get a diagnostic run to see if there was something else. We don't know what caused the injuries."
Siobahn nodded slightly. "Thank you, you can leave," she replied softly, grabbing a medical tricorder and flipping it open. "Bio scans say this is one Lieutenant Carey Lawson, Science officer, USS Wellington," she said quietly. "He's alive, but barely. Plasma burns to two thirds of his torso and severe lacerations, it looks like there is some kind of shrapnel embedded in the wounds..." her voice trailed off as she looked across at Janice, her eyes widening ever so slightly. "Am I the only one with a serious sense of Déjà vu?" She asked hesitantly.
No sooner had she spoken, the doors parted again, another officer being carried in, again sporting what at first glance appeared to be similar wounds. As soon as the doors had closed behind them, Lin and Eries had immediately stepped up to take control of the new patient.
"Cargo bay one to sickbay, incoming medical emergency, one body being transported directly to sickbay."
Siobahn looked up and shook her head. "What the hell is going on here!"
"No idea..." Lin said. "But whatever it is, it's weird."
Janice was half a second suspended in thought when things got started again in sickbay. 'Not again' she thought as she headed back to do her job.
Leaving Janice to the first of the patients, Siobahn moved to the body that had come via emergency transport. He was dead, there was no question about that, but scanning his body with her tricorder, Siobahn noted the same plasma type burns and shrapnel that both the other patients had reported. With a distinct lack of grace, she delved into one of the open wounds, wriggling her fingers until she found what she had been looking for, retrieving a small fragment of something, about half the size of her pinkie fingernail. Cleaning it off with a cloth, she turned it over in her hands before carrying it over to show both Odelle and Janice. "This looks exactly like the fragments we were pulling out of the Icarus crew yesterday, doesn't it?" she asked. "Have any of our crew been sent to the Icarus overnight?"
"Not that I know of." Odelle replied. "I think we had sent some teams over to assist from any rumours I'd heard. What are these burns??"
"They do look very familiar. Almost exactly to what we saw the first time. I pray that we are wrong however if it is true, we need to let the brass...er I meant the bridge know and post haste", she said, exhaling slowly.
"I don't know," Siobahn said quietly, "But I have a bad feeling about this." She drew in a deep breath, well aware that she was about to more than overstep her bounds as an Ensign. "Sickbay to Bridge," she used her commbadge to open the communications link to the bridge. "Captain, have any of our crew been sent to the Icarus in the past 24 hours?"
"We sent some engineers over to assist." Michelle replied. "Is everything all right?"
"Captain, I suggest that you may want to come down to Sickbay at your earliest convenience, and you may want to bring security with you." Siobahn cast a glance around Sickbay. "I think... what ever it was that attacked the Icarus crew and caused all their injuries, is now on our ship and attacking our crew." Siobahn said quietly.
"On my way." Michelle replied over the commbadge.
"You don't think it's these Shalti they've been talking about, do you?" Lin asked.
Janice's head turned ever so slightly at Ensign Fallon's comment. Finishing up ith this kid, who couldn't be more than what.....19 at the most, she asked, "Do you think that maybe this is somehow tied in with the Icarus and what is happening here? I agree that these wounds are identical but, how and why?", searching the eyes of her staff.
Siobahn glanced around sickbay, satisfied that she was not immediately placing any patient in further danger by not being one hundred percent present on sickbay floor. "I have a really bad feeling it is," she said quietly to Odelle, just loud enough that few, if any, others would have heard.
"Remember when first contact was just so much easier and didn't involve us getting shot at?" Lin said quietly as well while she began the scans... "On the surface they look like burns you would expect to get if engineering got blown to hell during an attack... But this was after the attack..."
"Plasma weapon of some kind?" Siobahn asked. "If it's a weapon used by the shelti or what ever they are, it would explain why so many of the Icarus crew were injured with the same injuries, but it would also mean that what ever they are is on our ship too." Feeling anxiety knotting in the pit of her stomach, she glanced over her shoulder at the corners of the rooms, almost expecting the shadows to start moving.
Walking over to where Ensign Fallon was along with Dr. Lin, sensing the jump of fear or almost a hair shy of panic, she put her hand on Ensign Fallon's shoulder. "If they are loose on the ship, let security deal with it. However if you are right, all of us, we are going to get busy again, and I need everyone on their game", she said.
When the summons to sickbay came, Shaille had been down on the lower decks with the residual crew from the Icarus, discussing what they knew of the Shalti with a handful of security officers from the other ship. The tales they told were grim at best. These aliens were unlike anything they had ever encountered, and by all accounts they certainly weren't something she wanted to get up close and personal with.
Using the data PADD in her hand, she brought up a status report on the prisoner in the brig, assuming that was the reason she had been called to sickbay. It was only when she met the Captain at the doors she realised that she was likely mistaken. "Captain Bartlett," she said, her surprise evident in her voice. "I can only assume that if you've been requested as well that it isn't to join the Christmas party."
"Unfortunately not." Michelle replied. "What's going on?"
Shaille shrugged slightly, a slightly perplexed expression crossing her face. "At this point, your guess is as good as mine," she replied. "I'm guessing we're about to find out though."
Siobahn drew a deep breath as she saw the Captain and the Chief of Security entering sickbay. She was confident with her conclusion that the Shalti had somehow made it onto their ship.
"Captain, Commander..." Siobahn addressed them both. "I apologise for calling you down here like this... I just... I mean..." She paused and drew another sharp breath. "We've had an influx of injuries this morning, injuries that are identical to those that the Icarus crew were presenting with yesterday. The same plasma burns and the same shrapnel wounds. None of these officers have left the Wellington. I think what ever has been attacking the Icarus crew is on our ship attacking our crew."
Shaille's first instinct was to dismiss the idea out of hand. The concept of these aliens being on HER ship and threatening HER crew was laughable, except that maybe it wasn't. Instead she reached up and tapped her commbadge. "Levine to Security, I want a level three bio scan of the entire ship immediately and I want the last 24 hours of internal sensor logs pulled up and checked for anomalies." She glanced at the Captain. "I don't see how they would have gotten aboard, but I won't dismiss it out of hand. It may be prudent to restrict off duty crew to quarters until we can determine what caused the injuries. On the chance there is Shalti on the ship, we don't want any of the crew being unnecessarily exposed."
Now looking at the Captain and security Chief, "Yes I agree with Ensign Fallon and my staff in that these injuries are identical as the ones we've had. I also agree with the Security Chief in keeping off duty personnel out of the corridors. It will help keep sickbay from being over booked so to speak", Janice said finally. Time for her to become the Chief Medical Officer and run her sickbay proper and such. If this was going to get crazy again, she had to be there for her staff and department.
"Do it." Michelle replied. "Start quarantines immediately... Have Doctors Soran and Fallon return the results of the scans so Security knows what to look for. I'll order us to Yellow Alert just in case."
Janice heared the captain clear as a bell and looked at both of her doctor's Well...let's get these quarantine quarters set up and make sure we are well stocked before any more injured arrive. Dr. Fallon set up a special stasis field for these pieces. I don't want them to go missing or get contaminated. Dr. Lin, make sure the medical tricorders are downloaded with the information we have from the initial incidents. We don't want anyone to die this time", she said. It was time for her to go to work and she helped in setting up the quarantine quarters. Janice was still plagued by the question as to why did they start shooting the Wellington crew and for what reason. It was good to have CPO Capillon in sickbay. For some reason Janice felt a little more secure now that she was there.
Siobahn didn't bother waiting for further instructions, opting instead to slip away from the gathered crowd and start doing what had to be done.
Satisfied that they had a course of action, Shaille excused herself and headed out into the corridor. She needed to go back over the information that Captain Averis had given them regarding the Shalti and get her staff together to formulate a plan of attack, given that they were facing a creature that seemingly couldn't be attacked, or even detected. At least, not yet.
