Hey smart people, close the space hole!

Mission: https://wellington.pegasusfleet.site/index.php/sim/missions/id/5
Location: Main Science Lab

Shaille walked into the primary science lab, relieved to see the small gathering of officers that were already there. Walking across to the replicator, she ordered herself another coffee, sipping it gratefully before returning to the other two officers. Hey, smart people, close the space hole."

“Sure!” Renee said in a bubbly voice, “Let me get a sheet of armor, a laser welder and patch it shut!” Her eyes rolled in her head, “I’m not a science weenie, why’d you need me?” She pouted, then whined, “I could be working on something really fun...”

Shaille rolled her eyes slightly, the whiny voice drilling straight through her still fragile head. "Because Lieutenant Cordale couldn't be here and he nominated you as the next most knowledgeable person regarding the ships capabilities from an engineering perspective." Shaille replied quietly. "We have about 72 hours until the away team comes back."

Renee pouted again, then crossed her arms and leaned back and sighed, "All right, all right... I guess we just need to find out what to do and I figure out how to do it?"

Shaille shrugged slightly as she sipped at her bucket sized mug of coffee. "I'm just here to make sure everyone stays alive," she said simply. "You lot need to work out how to make this happen."

Valeria joined the group after a moment, having reviewed the results of some simulations she was running on a nearby screen. "I have a few solutions in mind, Lieutenant." she started. "The easiest solution, if the word Easy can be applied here, is to use a kinetic polygraviton pulse to nudge the tear closed. Once the edges of the tear are close enough together, their own inherent energy field will snap the tear shut. The trick to that, though, is that we'd have to flag this area and the surround space for about a light-minute as a limited warp region. The ripples caused by warp travel may cause the tear to open again."

"As an alternative, there is a more permanent way to seal the breach. We launch a probe to the other side of the tear, and bounce an interpolar transduction wave between this universe and the other, reflecting it off the probe on the other side. With each pulse that passes through the tear, it promotes the tear to withdraw upon itself from both sides. Once sealed, it's effectively sealed on both ends, and rather than the subspace scar tissue that the previous method would leave, this would in essence be a clean heal with no need for a stellar speed limit."

The rabbitess gave a smirk towards Shaille. "Smart people close space hole." she just shook her head, "Apologies. We can have either method set up and ready to implement within three hours. The first method is easy and should produce results in about fifteen minutes. The longer we apply the patch, the more long term the seal. The second method is a long term solution, but we'd need at least a half of a standard hour from start to finish."

Shaille nodded, contemplating for a moment over the words that had been spoken. "We can't do anything until the away team is back regardless, so that gives you a good 72 hours to run simulations to make sure you're idea is going to work. I suggest you get Renee here involved and anyone else you think you might need. We should be rather confident that it will work the way you think before we start. Maybe work with the Icarus as well, they may as well get involved."

"Just for the sake of completeness, let's plan on the long-term solution." Renee's face turned contemplative now that there was an actual job at hand with an idea of the mechanics behind it, "Flagging the area won't stop anyone who doesn't care and I don't think we want this thing to open and let more of our visitors come through the thing." Her eyes closed for a few seconds as she visualized something, "We shouldn't even have to change much in the probe's hardware, just replace the primary deflection module for an amplification array and it should give us plenty of power."

Turning her gaze to Lieutenant Mordin and Ensign Villanova, Shaille raised one eyebrow questioningly. "What does Science think of that?" she asked, suddenly feeling very much like a negotiator and very much out of her league.

Valeria gave a soft smirk, turning to meet Shaille's gaze with her own. Hollow... empty... lusterless... "Actually, something you said made me re-think half of the plan. With the Icarus on one side of the tear, and the Wellington on the other, we won't even need a probe. We can have the Icarus echo the pulse instead."

"This'll work even better, since a probe would be easy prey for the Shalti on the other side. I'll run the simulation again with the Icarus instead of a probe. The extra power available might be able to cut the project time." she offered. then gave Shaille a nod, "Excellent suggestion."

"Great, well, I'll leave you all to your simulations, let me know when you've got a conclusive plan and I'll take it to the Captain so we're ready to go as soon as we safely can," Shaille replied with a smile. "Now if you'll excuse me... You've just reminded me that I have someone else I need to speak with. Any problems just let me know."

Valeria gave a nod, "Of course. You'll be our point of contact." she had a way of saying it that just seemed fair. Ts'usugi spoke bureaucracy afterall. It was their native tongue. The rabbitess then turned to Renee, "Let's adjust the simulation for the interpolar transduction wave to account for the Icarus, rather than an outfitted probe...."

Renee nodded slowly, eyes half-glazing over as her nose slightly scrunched in thought, "I can make projections for Icarus's capabilities, but unless I can get some actual data, they'll only be estimates. I could go see their Chief Engineer, I think their Commander Setine is in sickbay recovering from injuries, she'd know all about them."

"I can help where needed with preparing the echo." a Betazoid science officer replied.

"And we'll patch things through the main deflector." Renee pursed her lips, already imagining how she was going to handle the interface, "It can handle the prolonged transmission time best and if we need to boost the power, it'll definitely handle it best."

"Let's coordinate with the Icarus, and get this task underway."

"I'll head down to sickbay to see their Commander right away." Renee agreed, "I'll have my results pretty quick, I think."
