Location: Main Engineering
Timeline: TBD
After getting settled in and meeting the officer assigned to his security detail, Jason decided to take a look around the ship's facilities. So far he'd found everything to be incredibly well run and well organized. This ship was clearly Ross's baby and he could see it in the way Ross ran it. His command style, it seemed, isn't so much different from his when he was in the big chair. He made a mental note that perhaps this could serve as his flagship.
He walked into Engineering as part of his tour, though forgot that while when he was a Captain it was no big deal to just do a surprise tour, wearing a Commodore's uniform generated a different response. One he was reminded of as his concentration was interrupted by an Ensign announcing his presence.
"Commodore on deck!" the young Ensign called out. And here the Organization said the Federation lacked discipline...
Meru looked up from her console and came to attention. "Sir. I wasn't aware you were conducting an inspection."
"As you were." Jason replied to Alennis. "I'm not actually conducting an inspection, I'm just walking about ship now that we're underway."
J'Loni was busy replacing a blown relay...optical feeds...isolinear chips..."Blasted star base engineers...don't know a damaged relay from a new one...", she growled. She didn't hear the part about the Commodore being on the deck and she was so into what she was doing she didn't sense or feel William kicking her foot repeatedly.
Meru laughed a little having heard the outburst. "We're definitely ready to go. Aside from a few damaged relays?" she asked.
Hearing the new voice...sat up abruptly...banging her head on the console..."Fek'lar...who the he...Oh...", she said as William helped her from the floor. Rubbing her head...looking at the man standing there...noticed the insignia..." Commodore, welcome to the Engineering Musketeers Den. Yes, unfortunately I don't think Starfleet really knows exactly what they are doing. I mean...their engineers sir. This is the fourth damaged relay we have had to pull aside from optical fiber burn outs and damaged chips. Apart from the minor repairs it is a pleasure to be here", she said...a small smile crossing her face.
Jason chuckled. "Sounds like we need to get after some Starbases again."
Meru replied. "We did a refit back at Starbase 231 and I'm pretty sure the starbase personnel dropped off the supplies and went for a coffee break."
"So in otherwords, nothing's changed." Jason said. "I'm Commodore Myers... It's nice to meet you, ms...?" he asked J'Loni
The introduction was interrupted by one of the Jefferies Tubes panels on the wall opening, and allowing one of the engineers a chance to escape the confined spaces. Trick is, he was used to those confined spaces. The blue-furred weaseloid got a grip on the hatch egress with a prosthetic limb, and pulled himself up and out. "Got another batch of bad isoliner chips. What, did the last starbase just give us all the rejects?" then the engineer noticed he was among higher ranked company, and came to attention.
"Mo'Bri sir", she said, as Cordale stood ridged at attention. Breaking the awkward moment she continued..."In answer to the ensigns question, yes we did receive damaged parts. Now sir's it is my job to keep my lady running and just how the hell can I do that with this junk?", she said...holding up the junk that was just dropped. "I can't do my job with parts that are not up to specs. Sir we need to do level one diagnostics across the boards and then do a visual inspection of all the systems. I would also like to point out that since we do have bio neural gel packs, that we have an ample supply of back ups on hand", she said in one breath. Out of the corner of her eye she saw Eric coming with a handful of isolinesr chips in his hand as well. His face was red and she could sense his anger and, "Eric not now
...!", she said hastily.
"Boss this has got to stop! How the hell do they expect me to keep the ships computer cores working properly with shit like this?", he said and tossed the chips...
"Oh f****...Excuse me sir!", he said as he snapped to.
"I am sorry Commodore for Eric's interuption and for his language but he has a valid point. If we are to be out here wouldn't Starfleet have atleast supplied us with undamaged parts?", she said looking at Eric.
"As you all were." Jason said sympathetically before turning to the Chief Engineer. "Commander Meru, right?"
"Correct, sir."
"Commander, can I see the manifest of the last set of chips and relays you got at 231?"
"Sure." Alennis replied, pulling everything up on the console. "The team isn't wrong, sir. I'd estimate we've had at least 5 of these go out in the last few weeks. I'm waiting for a critical system failure somewhere at this point."
"I'll have a word with the station commander about that. there's no excuse for those relays and chips to be blowing out or faulty in the first place. People could die and missions delayed over nonsense like that." Jason said, looking less that impressed by what Meru had stated.
"I agree on that point Commodore...thete are way to many systems that can be affec...", she never finished the line. There was a loud explosion that set off the alarm systems in engineering. "Fek'lar...what in the name of Kahless blew out? Emergency alert two everyone to your stations", she hollered. "Eric run yourdiagnostics...James
run yours as well...Joseph watch environmental...what ever it was...find it!", she roared...ran to the pool table and pulled up the boards.
Jason stood to the side as the engineers began to pick up the pace of their work. Meru remained at her console. "Damn it. We've got power shortages on the lower decks. Commander, can you get life support stabilized down there?" she asked.
"Cordale, grab your kit...go with Joseph amd stabilize yhe environmental systems...fast!", she hollered.
"Excellent. Oh for the love of the Prophets! Every transporter on the ship just went out." Meru replied.
"Yes they did and by the sword of Kahless I am going to jave someones ass in the grinder! Someone could have died!", she roared. Looking at Joseph and Cordale she sent them off. Her hands were flying over the console inputting new commands and rerouting power and sub routines to avoid more blowouts.
Turning to face the Commodore..."Well sir...as you can see our worst fears happened and now...if I can't get the transporters back on line before we get there...you are going to have to shuttle down", she said, clearly agitated that this happened now...here...on her ship.
"I'll go advise the Captain." Jason said. "I hope it gets fixed soon."
"Bridge to Engieering." A rather irritated voice most of the crew were all too familiar with "Is someone on a coffee break down there? I've got power failures all over the ship."
"Meru here, Commander. We're working on it. Getting everything rerouted now." she replied. "Transporters are offline though."
"Hawk to Mo'Bri", came Joseph's on her combadge.
"Go ahead Joseph, what do you have?", she said quickly.
"We got some major damage here. It was caused by bad idolinear chips and bad relays that overloaded the ODN sub prorocessors. Can't use the transporters at all till we get this mess straightened out", he said.
"Do what you can. We need those transporters back and soon. Mo'Bri out!", she said and looked at her boss who looked very frustrated by all on this. This was a bad omen for this to happen. It was something that preceded a coming disaster.
Jason realized that his presence was likely to be a distraction as the scrambling by the engineers intensified. "I'll go and soothe the bridge for you and let you all get to work. Maybe we'll continue this another day." he said as he excused himself.
"Power is mostly restored but... How in the heck did every transporter on the ship blow out at the same time?" Meru asked in astonishment.
"Well Commander that will be Eric's and Cordale's job to find out. The how part of it any way...I don't like stuff like this happening so soon after we leave the station. It smells like...well...it smells like some one doesn't want us to succeed this mission, but far be it from me to say it", she said looking at her boss.
Meru considered what J'Loni said. "You think it's more than just a set of crappy equipment? Prophets, I hope not. Mr. Cordale, Eric... Go take a look at the transporter system. Get Lieutenant Martin in Ops to assist you. The transporters are his baby. He's going to be kind of mad. We better get on fixing this before Bowman threatens to assign us to a cargo freighter."
Looking at both engineers, "Well, you heard the boss move!", she said and laughed as she watched the two disappear. Turning back to the commander, "Try not to let her take your head off sir...", she said. J'Loni knew that smoothing out Bowman would not be an easy task and not envy the Bajoran in what she had to do.
"I need a report down there, Commander. It better be all hands on deck." Bowman said through Meru's commbadge.
"It's not likely to be anything less than that when we have power failures and transporter problems, ma'am. I've got a team working with Operations to sort out the transporter mess... I think we've gotten most of the power drainages under control."
"Why did this happen in the first place?" Bowman asked. "If it's any kind of incompetence or failure--"
"It's not. We think it might be due to some faulty relays and isolinear chips we picked up at Starbase 231. That's the running theory at the moment, but if you want more analysis, you're just going to have to let us work so we can actually give you some. Engineering out." Meru replied. "Alternatively, if you think you can fix this better than a room full of Engineers, you're welcome to drag your ass down here to do something other than bitch." she added once the comm was severed.
J'Loni let out a Klingon belly roll which was typical when needed. "That was well said sir. I couldn't put it better myself. I think that things will be just great down here", she said still laughing slightly. "Now to work..." she said and turned back to her console and its lengthy process.
