"All right. That's enough of all the formality. I don't have much more to say than I did when I took command unofficially." Michelle said. "With the change of command official, I will only reiterate that we will continue the work we were doing. I know that you will do the Federation proud as you always have. And I look so very forward to seeing you all do so. But now that I've had centre stage, it's time for a few of your fellow crew members to have their moment" she said. "Lieutenant Charles Damian, please step forward."
Looking a bit perplexed as to why he was being called out, Charles stepped up and faced Bartlett, then came to attention. "Lieutenant Charles Damian, as ordered ma'am.." he said.
"Mr. Damian, I am pleased to issue a Commendation for Service in regards to your efforts to secure a dangerous material on board the ship." She paused. "I am also pleased to promote you to the rank of Lieutenant Commander, with all rights and privileges of that rank thereof. Congratulations, Commander." she added as she handed him the citation and the pip box.
"Thank you, Comm...er...that is...Captain..." Damian stammered as he took the items from her. "If I may, I'd like to have the person who was instrumental in my getting this commendation step forward and pin this new rank for me." He looked at the group that was assembled. "Lieutenant Karen Walker."
Hearing her name, Walker blushed furiously and remained standing in her spot until she saw Charles motioning for her to join him. Stepping up to his side, she took the hollow pips from the box and proceeded to pin one to each side of his collar. Then, before returning to her place in the group, she whispered "You deserve it..."
Michelle then looked up... "Would all Engineering Personnel present please step forward?" she asked.
Cordale took a step up, then turned with caution to not whack someone with his tail as he took the next few steps forward.
J'Loni smiled as her people started to get up. Looking to see if all of them made it her smile widened as all the Musketeers started to get up, her smile got even brighter when William grabbed her and literally shoved her up and out in front of him as he got up. "Get going woman! It's your people and your job, and you are my wife and boss. Now get moving!!", he said. She almost fell as she got shoved, but caught herself and headed down to the front. Stopping in front of the captain, "Lt. Cmdr. J'Loni Mo'Bri reporting as ordered", she said.
William stepped next to his wife, "Lt. Jg. William Spanner, reporting as ordered", he said.
Thomas began to stand and suddenly grabbed Renee. "Come on you! They are calling us", he said pulling her with him.
Eric was dumbfounded when they were all called. He got up and walked down and stood next to his boss. Lt. Jg. Eric Matherson reporting as ordered ", he said.
Christine followed Eric and stood next to him. "Lt. Jg. Christine Zen, reporting as ordered," she said.
Next arrive were Thomas, dragging a very reluctant Renee with him. "Lt. Jg. Thomas James reporting as ordered", he said.
Renee squeezed Thomas's hand as she let herself come to a stop, "Yeah, yeah, I'm here too."
Last to arrive was Hawk. "Lt. Jg. Joseph Hawk reporting as ordered", he said, trying to smile as his wife and son and daughter looked on.
"Commander, I am pleased to issue yourself all engineers present and off ship a Departmental Commendation, Second Class for their efforts in restoring the ship nearly to battle readiness during the recent incident with the Cardassians and Klingons." she said. "Additionally, I am pleased to issue a Department Head Commendation to Lieutenant Commander J'Loni Mo'Bri as Chief Engineer, and posthumously to Lieutenant Commander Meru Alennis. "Lieutenants Junior Grade Zen, Cordale, Spanner, and James, please remain at the front.
Christine had started to leave, as did Thomas, Eric, William, and Joseph. They all turned back and stopped in front next to Cor, coming to attention.
J' Loni decided to stay with her junior officers in respect and waited for she knew what she hoped was coming next. Renee did a precise turn next to J'Loni, the same tingling sense in her head and knowing she'd otherwise be called back up for her part for Thomas.
Cordale gave a nod to the Chief as she got herself a sweet commendation. A great addition to add to all that fruit salad she had pinned to her already. Though when asked to remain, now the Thuxbrain started to turn. Why?
He did as requested, though, and remained. He really, really hated ceremonies like this. Especially promotion ceremonies.
"Lieutenants Junior Grade Christine Zen, Cor Cordale, Wlliam Spanner, and Thomas James, I am further pleased at the recommendation of your new Chief Engineer to..." she paused a moment though not enough to make it awkward. She remembered something in Cordale's psych profile about use of the word 'promotion' "award you the rank of full Lieutenant, with all the rights and privileges of the said rank thereof." she finished. "Congratulations, Lieutenants." she added as she handed out the pip boxes. "You've earned this, Mr. Cordale." she said quietly to Cor.
Renee snagged the one for Thomas and personally replaced his pips with the new ones, "I'd give you my old ones, but they're still so shiny new I haven't been able to scuff them up yet." She kissed him on the cheek, "And my 'new' old set are still in transit."
J'Loni stopped dead in her tracks and looked back at the captain. "Um...Captain did I hear you right? New Chief Engineer?", she said. Now she was a bit in shock, she knew the spot was open but she did not think she would get it so soon.
"You did." Michelle said warmly. "Congratulations."
"Thank you captain...I just didn't think it would happen this soon or like this...but thank you", she said looking at Bartlett.
"Had it not been for prior experience, I may have kept you there. But you were the next most senior person after Commander Meru." Michelle said. "It wasn't quite what I had planned, but then neither was this entire ceremony." she added with a partial grin.
"Would all Starfighter personnel step forward please?" Michelle said.
Hearing the call for the fighter squadron, Lawson stepped up in front of the captain, then turned and called out. "Commanders Cooper, Muller, and MacKensie...fall in with your squadrons facing me." Once the group had formed up, Lawson turned back to the captain and came to attention for the group. "Fighter squadron present and accounted for, captain."
"Commander, I am pleased to issue a Departmental Commendation Second Class to your department and to yourself for distinguished service during the defence of the Frontier Midnight station." Michelle said.
"On behalf of my pilots and squadron leaders, I thank you, captain. You've shown faith in us and we will do our best to continue to prove to you that your faith is justified."
"Commander, I am also pleased to personally issue you the Meritorious Departmental Commendation for your service."
Lawson took the commendation from her with a slight nod. "Once again, I thank you ma'am..." he said. He then turned back to his group. "Squadron...dis - MISSED!" He then stepped back into the ranks of the assembled officers and turned to face their captain once again.
"Lieutenant Junior Grade Valeria Mordin, please step forward." Michelle said.
Valeria was all posture and politic at the moment, officially on duty as it were. When called, she came to attention and took the first step to bring her to the aisle, then turned on a pivot sharp enough to threaten to cut the carpet. She advanced towards Bartlett, and came to attention in her presence. "Valeria Mordin, Lieutenant Second Grade, reporting as instructed."
"Lieutenant, in view of the terrible treatment at the hands of the Organization, and as it has in no way affected your diligence or determination to continue to serve Starfleet, I am pleased to issue you a Commendation for Loyalty. Additionally, I am happy to promote you to the rank of Lieutenant with all the rights and privileges of that rank thereof. Congratulations, Lieutenant."
Ts'usugi didn't smile, or truly openly show their emotions. Hidden away in the fortress of their crystal skulls, their true emotional state was theirs, and theirs alone. To say that Valeria actually smiled was to say everything that needed to be said about how she felt at that moment.
"Thank you ma'am. I'll double my efforts to ensure this moment has no regrets. For honor and duty." it seemed something of a routine, a renewal of oaths, or something of that nature. Once dismissed, Valeria returned to her original spot, tracing her original steps to the point where she hardly made new scuff marks in the carpet.
"Lieutenant Renee Salchin. Step Forward." Michelle said as she waited.
"Oh Sweet Jeebus and Murphy who is his prophet..." Renee muttered as she release Thomas's arm and made her way back up to the Captain, "Yeah, reporting as ordered and all that, ma'am. "
"Lieutenant, I am pleased to issue a Citation for Exceptional Skill for service above and beyond the call of duty in resolving the recent engineering problems with the ship." she said. "Commander Mo'Bri suggested we promote you to Ensign, but I suspect you're probably okay with remaining at Lieutenant, hmm?" she added with a joke.
Renee grinned and chuckled at the last, "I think I can suffer at this exalted rank, Cap'n Crunch. And, thank you." She accepted the award and half-skipped back over to Thomas after flashimg a 'V for Victory' sign to the crowd.
Michelle then turned to Ensign Gervais for his award. "Ensign Andrew Gervais, please step forward." she said
Andrew nodded and came to attention in front of her. "Ma'am."
"Ensign, I am pleased to issue you a Citation for Exceptional Service in regards to your assistance rendered to Commodore Myers that was above and beyond the requirements of your position. Congratulations, Ensign." Michelle said as she handed him the citation.
"Thank you, ma'am." he replied, still a little shocked that he was awarded anything.
"Commander Rostra Tang, please step forward." she said.
Oooo, that was her! Rostra's twin forms perked up, and each of them walked out into the center aisle. She waited until the aisle was empty before she started up, since she needed both lanes to advance. Pesky Dalacari physiology.
She made her way up to the presence of the Captain, and came to attention as best she could. Digitigrade biology prevented truly straightening the legs comfortably. "Rostra Tang, reporting as requested."
"Commander, I am pleased to issue a Gold Star for your assistance with the Dalacari drone forces." she said before realizing that it sort of sounded like a funny name for an award. "For the record, I don't name the awards." Michelle said with a bit of a smirk.
"Noted for the record." Rostra said with a pair of smirks. "I'll make sure everyone involved back on the Frontier Midnight knows their work is appreciated."
"Well, I guess that would include Six Three Seven too. I mean, Six Three Seven also. Though, if we start giving awards to Thinking Engines, who knows where that'll..."
"...lead. Okay, done now. Tangent for later. Thank you." the pair smiled towards Michelle. Once dismissed, the pair made their way back to their original standing. It *WAS* a funny name for an award, now that she thought about it.
"Roger Stevens." Michelle said. "Please step forward."
Roger looked up from cleaning up after the buffet line rather confused. Looking to Jack, who just shruged, he took off his gloves and straightened out his chefs uniform and walked up too the captain. For those who hadn't seen him before, or so up close, he was a mountain of a man, bigger then most klingons and looked stronger then a vulcan.
"Did you need something Captain?"
"Mr. Stevens, for your initiative and original thinking that allowed us to recapture Lo'Mah, I award you a Commendation." Michelle said. "Congratulations."
He smiled, taking the award and looked at it with a bit of nestalgia in his eyes "Thank you ma'm, not sure how punching threw a force field is creative, but i appreciate it non the less" He gives her what seems like a well practiced salute and head back down to finish his work.
"Lieutenant Commander Mo'Bri... I guess I wasn't quite done with your award stash yet." Michelle said. "Please come back up."
About half way back to seat she heard her name and stopped again. Turning around she looked before she took her next step aand went back and stopped in front oof the captainn, "Captain...?", she said as she came to attention.
"For your efforts above and beyond the call of your regular duties, I am pleased to offer you the Silver Star for your service in assisting with the negotiations. At the recommendation of Admiral Marquette, you have also been issued a Merit Award for Diplomacy." Michelle said. "Congratulations, Commander."
At first she didn't know whether to salute or faint or shake the captain's hand. "Um...For the first time in my life, I don't know what to say...", she said, looking at the captain.
"Well.. we're glad you knew what to say when we needed it." Michelle said. "Congrats again as she offered her hand out."
"I am glad I could help. I am sure the Chancellor will continue to abide with the terms of the agreement. I know he will allow me to continue in the role of ambassador for he Klingon people", she said, taking the captains hand and shaking it. Then she returned to her seat finally. William gave her a kiss and so did Jenna, who was behaving like a good girl.
"First Lieutenant Nyx Valentine, please step forward." Michelle replied.
The Tialan reluctantly detached herself from the shadow she'd been lurking in, straightening herself and her absolutely pristine dress uniform, one hand resting on the over/under arranged swords on her right hip to prevent any swinging, She marched fluidly up to the Captain, then bowed with knee bent and crossed, almost like a slight curtsey, hands going outwards slightly, a formal Tialan obeisance for very formal occasions, "My Lady, you summoned, I am come." She straightened back up to attention.
"Lieutenant, for your prompt identification of Gul Kasella before the battle, I am pleased to issue you a Gold Star. Had it not been detected, many more lives would have been lost and we may very well be preparing for war at this moment." Michelle said. "Congratulations."
Nyx had been concerned that she was about to be reprimanded, given the 'loyalties' most of the unit had shown. This threw her quite a bit, even as the medal was pinned on her by the Captain, "Th-thank you, My Lady. I shall endeavour to continue to deserve the trust and faith you have shown to me." She repeated the curtsey-bow and returned to the crowd, but not retreating to the back.
"And finally... The individuals named next will not be able to step forward. But I have placed these awards on their files and they will be forwarded to surviving family members. Please join me in a moment of reflection for the following officers and awards." she paused. "To Captain Owen Ross, a Star Cross for his efforts in attempting to secure peace between the Dalacari, the Federation, and the Klingon Empire as well as a Purple Heart. To Lieutenant Commander Meru Alennis, a Distinguished Service Medal for her efforts in uncovering the conspiracy aboard the ship, as well as a Purple Heart. And lastly, a Purple Heart for the following officers. Lieutenant Colonel William Blanchard, Lieutenant Commander Movek, Lieutenant Commander Engal Rennan, Lieutenant Commander T'Pral, Lieutenant Jesse Martin, Lieutenant Lamira Del, Lieutenant Suvir, and Lieutenant Junior Grade Julia Holt. Lastly, I am pleased to award a Citation to Ensign Paul Copeland for sacrificing his life in attempt to save a Starfleet Officer. We are poorer without the examples of those named." Michelle said as she stopped to simply say nothing.
Rostra promised she wouldn't cry, but now that everything had calmed down and the pressure was off hearing all those names just hit her like a tram. She sniffled, and even went so far as to offer herself a tissue from her pocket. She promised she wouldn't cry, but she planned for the worst.
Cordale, on the other hand, was no stranger to loss. He knew remembering those that weren't coming home was going to come up sooner or later, and he'd add those names to his drinking list later. Was it healthy? Probably not, but the Thux really didn't care. He'd remember their sacrifice along with that of his brothers. Tomorrow, he'd be drinking for eleven more. Tomorrow, his liver would be the hardest working liver in the quadrant.
Through it all, Valeria stood dry eyed. In the Empire, death in the service was a noble end. It wasn't sought after, but there was no shame in it. No disgrace. Though, she had a heart, and recognized that each of them possibly had a family that would never see them again, and that made her think back to her own incarceration and the endgame planned for her. Then, it hit her that she very likely would be dead now if not for Roger. The thought of it being her name on that list unsettled her, and she took THAT moment to reflect.
"Absent companions." Hailey and Calypso echoed each other, Cally's hand had stopped in mid-reach to the flask still tucked away in Hailey's pocket. Both remembered compatriots and friends that they'd lost in the line of duty. A slight slap of her hand and it dropped away.
Renee's arms had wrapped around Thomas's right arm and she squeezed it tight, remembering Commander Meru, even for just those couple weeks. Tears brimmed in her eyes at the thought and she rubbed them against Thomas's shoulder to wipe them away.
Thomas looked at Renee and wiped away her tears again with his hand, "Renee, please don't cry hun. I know how you hurt, but so do I. Maybe I only knew Meru for a short time but I do miss her and it was such a shame to find out that she died in the way she did but at lease that beast Lo'Mah is jailed and that bitch of a Cardassian woman will get hers soon.
J'Loni was sitting with Jenna and William when she got up and headed down front. She was determined to say something and she did. "Captain Bartlett, crewmates, friends, I really had no idea of what the out come of this mission was, nor did I even foresee the events that were to unfold, yet they did and it saddens me deeply to lose people. I didn't know them well but I did know them enough to come to admire them and what they stood for. All the good things in the world were in these people and it was a very hard thing to accept, even for me. I only knew them for a short time, but for those here assembled, I can only imagine the immense loss you all feel. I can sense the loss in this room and the sadness as well. However, I can tell you this, I can bet any amount of money that all of them are looking on all of us here and watching hos we take their deaths. It is up to us now to carry on their dreams and those of the Federation and to make tis new exploration into the Delta Quadrant a success not only for us but for those who live in the Delta Quadrant. I for one will carry them for ever in my heart and mind, and will struggle to make this new exploration work for all those we meet", she said tearfully. Looking at the Captain, she headed back to her seat and sat next to William and her daughter and cried silently.
Michelle nodded. "I will add my voice to agreement with that sentiment. I served with most of them these last two years as most of us have. To not have them here is still unnerving. To think of the circumstances of their deaths is terrifying. But... I can't think of any others better equipped to carry what they started forward. So.. On we go." she said, almost a little moved herself by the reactions of the crew.
Gervais stood quietly, still too much on his mind. The loss of the senior staff was one thing but there was one death he still struggled with. Theirs accomplished something. Paul's? It never should have happened in the first place. He simply sat quietly.
Michelle waited for any others to speak and then looked on at the crew. "All right.. Well.. All hands, you are dismissed. Please.. feel free to enjoy yourselves." she said.
