(This post takes place just after the meeting with the captain post)
ON:
As she watched the guys and captain leave, she tapped the commander on the shoulder, "Mind sticking around for a moment?", she said, pointing to an empty seat. "Grab your poison and let's talk", she said smilling.
"Of course." Meru replied. She opted for a cup of coffee... "The Captain went for the scotch, didn't he?"
"Yes he did, help yourself", she said pointing to the bottle of Scotch.
Alennis obliged. She wasn't much of a drinker but 14 year old scotch is 14 year old scotch and who was she to refuse what must be a gift from the Prophets on a day like today. She took a sip of it... "Where did you get such a beautiful bottle of scotch?" she asked.
"It was a gift from an old friend, who had a case in his office", she said. J'Loni had always had a fresh pot of coffee and that bottle around just for occassions like this.
"Well commander, it looks like you are my boss. Feels a bit funny not to be the boss after being one for so many years. However, it is just good to be back in engineering again", she added, sipping her blood wine.
"Your friend has good taste." Meru said. "I'm not much of a drinker, but this stuff could change that." she paused. "And I'm not one for cracking the whip on subordinates. If everyone does their stuff, and works together it's a win win for me. I'm simply the one that gets to sit in on long and boring senior staff meetings." she said with a sip.
"Well I think it only fair to explain how I run my people and my department. Like you, I hate to be woke up at 0230 with some stupid small thing that I know could have been solved by one of my department heads. Believe me, I have had my share of that too. That is why I would hold simple drills on basic problem solving and what to do if you can't solve it. What would be your next step, and that would be to go to you department head and if he or she can't solve it, you go to the assistant chief. Most often the assistant chief would be able to fix it, but if that doesn't work, then it is up to him to take it to the chief, not you. See this eliminates having to get you up all hours for a simple problem and a smoother running department", she said, finishing her bloodwine.
"Agreed. I think some drills could actually be beneficial. And if nothing else, keep Commander Bowman off our backs. Sorry about that, by the way. She's just kind of a demanding Fire Cave Beast. More so lately. Right now, I try and maintain things based on priority. Life support and propulsion first, computer second, and everything else down to minor stuff after that. Sometimes it works, other ways not so much." Meru said, taking another sip. "Though it seems your guys are pretty on top of everything."
"I try to keep it that way", she said. After a few minutes she finished her blood wine, "Well commander, do you have any questions or concerns that you might want to address?", she added.
"Mostly, I just want to make sure that you've all settled in. I think I'll put your team to work during the Beta shift and place you in charge for it. You'll have a good team, and I'd encourage you to get to know Lieutenant Cordale. He knows his stuff as well and if necessary can keep the XO off your back." Meru replied. "Of course, I hope you'll be able to tolerate Commander Bowman. She never started out like this, but the last few months she's become quite demanding and snippy."
"So I gathered from the bits and pieces of conversations I have been hearing. Now sir if there isn't anything else, I have some work to do", she said standing up.
"I won't hold you up. I look forward to seeing what you and your team can do." Meru replied. "And of course, if there are ever any questions, I'm usually not too far away making sure we all don't blow up."
"I am sure we can work together and efficiently so that nothing were to blow up...as you put it sir", she called out to her as she left her office.
